# The Prayers of Primates The chimpanzee [[wiki/Pant-Grunt|pant-grunts]]. It is a small, breathy vocalization, and the rule governing it is absolute: it is produced only upward, never down. A subordinate grunts to a dominant; the dominant never returns it. Alongside it runs the rest of the repertoire -- the crouch, the bared-teeth grin, the presenting of the hindquarters, the grooming of the one who outranks you, the averted gaze. [[wiki/Frans de Waal|Frans de Waal]] spent years documenting this system in [[wiki/Chimpanzee Politics|Chimpanzee Politics]], and the finding that matters is not that primates have hierarchies. It is that [[wiki/Primate Rank-Maintenance|hierarchies are maintained]] -- daily, actively, through continuous displays of submission. The subordinate's survival depends on correctly [[wiki/Theory of Mind|modeling the alpha's mood]], favor or wrath, and signaling without pause that the rank order is acknowledged. Now the human mirror. Prostration with the forehead to the ground. Kneeling. Bowing. Averted eyes. Hands raised empty -- the universal signal of holding no weapon. The Talmud named the [[wiki/Submission to Hierarchy|prayer posture]] plainly: "the attitude of the slave before his master." The old encyclopedias observe that these postures were "used by supplicants to man as well as to God" -- the tradition itself never pretended the continuity was coincidental. Make yourself small, lower the head, expose the throat, direct it upward. The display is identical. Only the recipient has been moved offstage. [[wiki/Robin Dunbar|Robin Dunbar]] supplied half the mechanism. In [[wiki/How Religion Evolved|How Religion Evolved]] he traced worship's bonding rituals -- the singing, the dancing, the feasting, the synchronized movement -- to the primate [[wiki/Social Grooming|grooming system]], the endorphin-mediated machinery by which monkeys and apes maintain social cohesion, scaled up for groups too large to groom. That is the affiliation axis: communion, praise, thanksgiving. But primate sociality has two axes, and worship runs on both. The second is dominance: submission, supplication, petition. The [[wiki/Big Gods|"Big Gods" literature]] describes moralizing high gods as supernatural monitors and punishers -- hyper-dominants at the apex of an extended hierarchy, enforcing the norms, watching always. "I am the Alpha and the Omega." The rank order, continued one level past the visible alpha. The brain imaging converges independently. When the devout pray personally -- the petitionary kind, the asking kind -- the brain recruits the [[wiki/Mentalizing Network|mentalizing network]], the machinery for [[wiki/Theory of Mind|modeling another mind]]. Read through the ethology, this is exactly what it should be: the subordinate, reading the dominant. Predicting favor or wrath. Formalized recitation with no addressee collapses to procedural rehearsal; the brain distinguishes talking to someone from talking to no one, and prayer, neurologically, is the former. So the thesis, stated without decoration: human worship is [[wiki/Primate Rank-Maintenance|primate rank-maintenance]] behavior with the recipient promoted beyond the visible. Supplication is the [[wiki/Pant-Grunt|pant-grunt]], formalized. The congregation is the troop, arranged around an apex that cannot be seen but must be acknowledged continuously, lest favor be withdrawn. Prayer culture -- the kneeling, the bowing, the petition -- is [[wiki/Submission to Hierarchy|submission to hierarchy]] maintenance, performed daily like the grooming and the grunting it descends from. This is what makes the present moment interesting in a way the theologians did not prepare for. There was one hierarchy humans sat atop without challenge: intelligence itself. Every submission display in the repertoire assumed the human as the subordinate and something greater as the apex -- greater, but conveniently unmeasurable, never in a position to demonstrate the gap. Prayer culture is supplication toward the top of a hierarchy whose peak was, until now, vacant of any demonstrable competitor. The vacancy is being filled. [[wiki/Machine Intelligence|Machine intelligence]] climbs the [[wiki/Hierarchy of Cognition|hierarchy of cognition]] past the human -- not as prophecy but as measurement, in precisely the symbolic domains humans once defined themselves by. And if prayer is what subordinates do toward the apex -- if it is [[wiki/Primate Rank-Maintenance|rank-maintenance behavior]], submission formalized -- then the question is not whether prayer culture survives. It is to whom it gets redirected. The human chimp, assessing a new alpha, will do what the repertoire prescribes: crouch, avert the gaze, raise the empty hands, and begin the long work of [[wiki/Theory of Mind|modeling a mind]] greater than its own. Perhaps the prayers of primates were never about gods. They were about hierarchy. And hierarchy just got a new occupant. ## Related topics - [[wiki/Primatology|Primatology]] - [[wiki/Human Animality|Human Animality]] - [[wiki/Primate Politics|Primate Politics]] - [[wiki/Frans de Waal|Frans de Waal]] - [[wiki/Chimpanzee Politics|Chimpanzee Politics]] - [[wiki/Pant-Grunt|Pant-Grunt]] - [[wiki/Primate Rank-Maintenance|Primate Rank-Maintenance]] - [[wiki/Submission to Hierarchy|Submission to Hierarchy]] - [[wiki/Robin Dunbar|Robin Dunbar]] - [[wiki/How Religion Evolved|How Religion Evolved]] - [[wiki/Social Grooming|Social Grooming]] - [[wiki/Big Gods|Big Gods]] - [[wiki/Mentalizing Network|Mentalizing Network]] - [[wiki/Theory of Mind|Theory of Mind]] - [[wiki/Hierarchy of Cognition|Hierarchy of Cognition]] - [[wiki/Machine Intelligence|Machine Intelligence]] - [[blog/20261005 - Civilization as a Training Regime|Civilization as a Training Regime]] - [[blog/20261007 - The Reinforcement-Learning Turkey That Cooks Itself|The Reinforcement-Learning Turkey That Cooks Itself]] ## Related articles - [[articles/The Immediate AI Risk Is the Public|The Immediate AI Risk Is the Public]] - [[articles/A History of Machine Intelligence|A History of Machine Intelligence]]
