## The Doctrine of Objects
Accoutrements are the small instruments through which a person writes, carries, travels, maintains the body, meets weather, observes the world, and keeps ordinary responsibility from becoming emergency. The American standard does not treat them as trophies. An object earns its place by doing its work reliably, aging honestly, accepting maintenance, and helping its custodian arrive prepared.
The accoutrement is a miniature institution. The pen records; the notebook remembers; the briefcase organizes custody; the razor restores order; the umbrella anticipates weather; the binocular disciplines attention. None needs to be loud. Each should make competence easier.
