# Value One — Integrity
[[american/American Character - The American Trust Code|← The American Trust Code]]
## Do What Is Right When It Is Hard
Integrity is continuity between principle, word, and action when convenience would reward their separation. It appears when a promise remains binding after the audience leaves, when a credential remains exact despite the temptation to inflate it, and when an error is named before someone else discovers it. Integrity is not moral self-display; it is the quiet refusal to purchase advantage with a future betrayal of trust.
The American system depends upon people who can be entrusted with discretion, equipment, money, data, authority, deadlines, and the well-being of others. Rules and audits matter because institutions require verification, yet no system can inspect every act before it occurs. Integrity supplies the behavior between controls. It is the human infrastructure on which every formal safeguard quietly depends.
**Practices of integrity**
- Keep the word or renegotiate it before failure.
- State credentials, evidence, costs, and limitations accurately.
- Refuse private conduct that would disgrace the public claim.
- Correct the record without waiting to be forced.
- Protect another person's dignity when advantage favors exposure.

Honor is not the reputation that survives inspection. Honor is the conduct that made concealment unnecessary.
