# Value Two — Competence [[american/American Character - The American Trust Code|← The American Trust Code]] · [[american/American Ethos - Axiom 02 - Competence Is Beautiful|Competence Is Beautiful]] ## Excellence Is a Duty Competence is knowledge converted into dependable action. It is morally significant because other people build plans around the assumption that the work will function, the answer will be accurate, the tool will be ready, and the person accepting responsibility understands what has been accepted. Excellence becomes a duty whenever failure transfers its cost to someone who trusted the claim. Mastery is not contempt for beginners. A competent American institution teaches, documents, reviews, and improves because the purpose is durable capability rather than the preservation of insider prestige. The expert who cannot explain, train, or leave a usable record has protected a position more carefully than a system. **Practices of competence** - Learn the craft beyond the vocabulary used to describe it. - Prepare for the predictable demands of the room and mission. - Ask early when knowledge is insufficient. - Document work so capability survives absence and succession. - Finish the maintenance and follow-through that glamorous effort neglects. Competence becomes visible in [[american/American Comportment - 06 - Meetings and Rooms|Meetings and Rooms]] and [[american/American Comportment - 04 - Correspondence and the Written Person|Correspondence]]. A civilization becomes capable one reliable person at a time; the impressive moment matters less than the work that continues to function after the person has left. ## Simple Reminders, Quotations, and Thoughts > “The American dream does not come to those who fall asleep.” [[reminders/American Pride/The American Dream Requires Wakefulness by Jimmy Carter|∴]] > **— Jimmy Carter**, *Simple Reminders on Real American Pride* > “One of the great mysteries in the world is the success that lies in conscientious work.” [[reminders/Competence/The Mystery of Conscientious Work by Calvin Coolidge|∴]] > **— Calvin Coolidge**, *Simple Reminders on Real American Pride* > “I just have my own attitude.
