# Value Four — Responsibility [[american/American Character - The American Trust Code|← The American Trust Code]] ## Own the Choice and Anticipate the Consequence Responsibility joins authority to consequence. The responsible person does not claim the decision while success is visible and distribute ownership once cost appears. Choice creates an obligation to anticipate foreseeable effects, prepare the people and systems carrying the work, monitor what follows, and repair what the decision damages. American responsibility is active rather than merely confessional. Saying “that was mine” matters because evasion corrupts trust, but ownership reaches completion only through amendment and changed practice. The apology, revised process, corrected record, paid cost, and restored relationship are the material forms through which responsibility returns to the world. **Practices of responsibility** - Clarify the decision, owner, deadline, and measure of completion. - Anticipate second-order effects before assigning cost to others. - Close loops rather than treating intention as completion. - Name failure without “if,” “but,” or blame dispersed through the room. - Repair the system that allowed the failure to repeat. Responsibility is taught most directly in [[american/American Comportment - 06 - Meetings and Rooms|Meetings and Rooms]] and [[american/American Comportment - 08 - Conflict, Repair, and Discretion|Conflict and Repair]]. Authority without ownership is merely access to consequence; responsibility is what makes authority legitimate. ## Simple Reminders, Quotations, and Thoughts > “Nothing can take the place of the ordinary, everyday performance of duty.” [[reminders/Civic Character/The Everyday Performance of Duty by Theodore Roosevelt|∴]] > **— Theodore Roosevelt**, *Simple Reminders on Real American Pride* > “Scientific research and engineering is a continuous series of solving puzzles.” [[reminders/Scientific Literacy/Research as Continuous Problem Solving by Nancy Grace Roman|∴]] > **— Nancy Grace Roman**, *Simple Reminders on Real American Pride* > “Nothing ends here; our hopes and our journeys continue.” [[reminders/Exploration/Hope and the Journey Continue by Ronald Reagan|∴]] > **— Ronald Reagan**, *Simple Reminders on Real American Pride* > “If the size of your failures isn’t growing, you’re not going to be inventing at a size that can actually move the needle.” [[reminders/Innovation/Failures Large Enough to Matter by Jeff Bezos|∴]] > **— Jeff Bezos**, *Simple Reminders on Real American Pride* > “Sometimes life’s gonna hit you in the head with a brick.
