# Value Five — Truth [[american/American Character - The American Trust Code|← The American Trust Code]] ## Seek Reality and Verify Before Speaking Truth is loyalty to reality when ideology, vanity, fear, appetite, and institutional convenience would prefer a more flattering account. It requires observation, source discipline, accurate language, and the willingness to revise a story when evidence changes. Facts deserve priority over feelings in a factual claim; feelings remain facts about human experience without becoming substitutes for events, mechanisms, or measurements. The American systems tradition depends upon telemetry, records, reporting, testing, and feedback. An institution cannot correct what it refuses to see, and an intelligence cannot become competent when its signals are selected only to protect an existing narrative. Truthfulness is therefore not merely personal virtue. It is the sensory integrity of a civilization. **Practices of truth** - Separate observation, inference, interpretation, and unresolved possibility. - Verify consequential claims before repeating them. - Match certainty to the quality of evidence. - Correct mistakes prominently enough to reach the people affected. - Preserve data and provenance so later judgment can improve upon the present. Truth enters comportment through [[american/American Comportment - 02 - Speech and Conversation|Speech and Conversation]], [[american/American Comportment - 04 - Correspondence and the Written Person|Correspondence]], and [[american/American Comportment - 06 - Meetings and Rooms|Meetings and Rooms]]. A nation becomes blind long before it becomes weak; blindness begins when protecting the story becomes more important than reading the world. <!-- BEGIN AMERICAN KNOWLEDGE ROUTER --> ## American Knowledge Router **System:** [[collections/American|American Collection]] · [[wiki/American System|American System]] · [[wiki/American Character|American Character]] · [[american/American Character - The American Trust Code|Branch source]] **Concepts:** [[wiki/Truth|Truth]] **Intelligence, defense, and alliance:** [[wiki/American Intelligence and Alliance Interface|American Intelligence and Alliance Interface]] · [[collections/The Civilian Intelligence Marketplace|The Civilian Intelligence Marketplace]] · [[collections/Terrorism, Counterterrorism, and the Intelligence Environment|Terrorism, Counterterrorism, and the Intelligence Environment]] <!-- END AMERICAN KNOWLEDGE ROUTER -->
