# Value Six — Service [[american/American Character - The American Trust Code|← The American Trust Code]] ## Put Capability at the Disposal of the Mission Service gives competence a purpose beyond self-display. It asks what the person can protect, build, maintain, clarify, or improve for people who may never return the favor. Mission, team, nation, and the common world do not erase the individual; they provide a scale at which cultivated ability becomes morally consequential. American service includes public office, military and intelligence work, science, enterprise, caregiving, teaching, infrastructure, enforcement, skilled trades, and ordinary citizenship. Its unifying feature is not employment category but directed capability. The person understands that freedom was inherited through the work of others and answers the inheritance by becoming useful in turn. **Practices of service** - Learn what the mission actually requires before performing helpfulness. - Place credit where it belongs and responsibility where it can act. - Preserve personal capacity so service can continue without martyrdom. - Mentor the next person until capability no longer depends upon one name. - Measure contribution by improved conditions rather than visible sacrifice. Service shapes every comportment domain, especially [[american/American Comportment - 06 - Meetings and Rooms|Meetings and Rooms]] and [[american/American Comportment - 09 - Everyday Civic Courtesy|Everyday Civic Courtesy]]. Skill reaches its highest form when another person can safely rely upon it. ## Simple Reminders, Quotations, and Thoughts > “If there is need of more brotherhood, it will be found in more service.” [[reminders/Civic Character/Brotherhood Through Service by Calvin Coolidge|∴]] > **— Calvin Coolidge**, *Simple Reminders on Real American Pride* > “Through our scientific genius we have made of the world a neighborhood; now through our moral and spiritual genius we must make of it a brotherhood.” [[reminders/Scientific Literacy/Scientific Genius and Moral Genius by Martin Luther King Jr.|∴]] > **— Martin Luther King Jr.**, *Simple Reminders on Real American Pride* > “The point is to have a career, to write because you’re absolutely mesmerized by the subject, in a way that serves the subject.” [[reminders/American Spirit/A Career in Service to the Subject by Toni Morrison|∴]] > **— Toni Morrison**, *Simple Reminders on Real American Pride* <!-- BEGIN AMERICAN KNOWLEDGE ROUTER --> ## American Knowledge Router **System:** [[collections/American|American Collection]] · [[wiki/American System|American System]] · [[wiki/American Character|American Character]] · [[american/American Character - The American Trust Code|Branch source]] **Concepts:** [[wiki/Service|Service]] **Intelligence, defense, and alliance:** [[wiki/American Intelligence and Alliance Interface|American Intelligence and Alliance Interface]] · [[collections/The Civilian Intelligence Marketplace|The Civilian Intelligence Marketplace]] · [[collections/Terrorism, Counterterrorism, and the Intelligence Environment|Terrorism, Counterterrorism, and the Intelligence Environment]] · [[collections/US-Israel Leadership Alliance|US–Israel Leadership Alliance]] <!-- END AMERICAN KNOWLEDGE ROUTER -->
