# Value Nine — Courage

## Do the Hard Thing for What Is Right
Courage is action taken under understood risk for a purpose worthy of the cost. It differs from aggression because courage does not need danger as an audience. It differs from recklessness because consequences are not ignored. The courageous person can tell an unwelcome truth, accept a difficult assignment, protect another person, enforce a lawful boundary, admit a failure, or remain composed long enough to choose the useful act over the popular one.
American courage includes battlefield valor, civic service, scientific dissent, entrepreneurial construction, institutional repair, and ordinary moments in which silence would purchase comfort through another person's loss. The scale changes; the governing structure does not. Fear is perceived, consequence is weighed, and duty remains capable of moving the body.
**Practices of courage**
- Name the actual risk instead of performing fearlessness.
- Prepare so bravery is supported by capability.
- Speak difficult truth with evidence and proportion.
- Protect the vulnerable without converting vulnerability into spectacle.
- Accept the cost attached to a chosen stand.
Courage is visible in [[american/American Comportment - 01 - Presence and Bearing|Presence and Bearing]], [[american/American Comportment - 02 - Speech and Conversation|Speech and Conversation]], and [[american/American Comportment - 08 - Conflict, Repair, and Discretion|Conflict and Repair]]. Courage is not the absence of fear; it is the refusal to let fear become the final authority.
