# Value Ten — Stewardship [[american/American Character - The American Trust Code|← The American Trust Code]] · [[american/American Ethos - The Next 250|The Next 250]] ## Protect What Is Not Yours Absolutely Stewardship begins with the recognition that many of the most consequential things in a life are held rather than owned: institutions, offices, records, tools, land, knowledge, public trust, family memory, national inheritance, and the conditions into which later people will arrive. Possession creates authority for a time; stewardship creates duty across time. The steward maintains before collapse, improves without erasing provenance, and leaves a usable record for successors. Tradition becomes responsible through stewardship because the past is neither worshiped nor discarded. Modernity becomes responsible for the same reason because innovation is judged partly by the world it leaves available to people who did not consent to the experiment. **Practices of stewardship** - Maintain objects, systems, institutions, and relationships before failure. - Preserve records and explain decisions for those who follow. - Repair inherited defects without destroying what still serves. - Build for durability, succession, and responsible transfer. - Leave people, places, and systems better than they were found. Stewardship reaches every domain of American Comportment and finds its temporal horizon in [[american/American Ethos - The Next 250|The Next 250]]. A civilization endures when enough people care for what cannot repay them because they understand that inheritance is a promise made between strangers across time. ## Simple Reminders, Quotations, and Thoughts > “A life is not important except in the impact it has on other lives.” [[reminders/Civic Character/A Life Measured by Its Impact by Jackie Robinson|∴]] > **— Jackie Robinson**, *Simple Reminders on Real American Pride* > “I wish to avail myself of all that is already known and then if possible add my mite to help on the future workers who will attain final success.” [[reminders/Exploration/Adding One’s Mite to Future Work by Wilbur Wright|∴]] > **— Wilbur Wright**, *Simple Reminders on Real American Pride* > “The real questions are: Does it solve a problem?
