# The Controlled Vocabulary [[american/American Ethos - Vision and Doctrine|← American Ethos: Vision and Doctrine]] ## Why the Vocabulary Is Controlled A cultural grammar becomes teachable only when its important words keep stable meanings. The controlled vocabulary prevents aesthetic, moral, behavioral, institutional, and commercial concepts from collapsing into one another. It also allows the same term to recur across briefings, manuals, collections, and visual cards without changing its intellectual altitude each time it appears. | Term | Controlled meaning | |---|---| | **Aesthetic** | The visual, material, spatial, and sensory expression of the standard. | | **Ethos** | The guiding beliefs and civilizational philosophy beneath the standard. | | **Character** | The moral values governing conduct, especially when advantage or observation disappears. | | **Comportment** | Manners, etiquette, bearing, and protocol integrated into embodied conduct. | | **Form** | Structure that converts capacity into usable freedom: discipline, proportion, bearing, and self-possession. | | **Field** | The operating world of movement, weather, travel, infrastructure, risk, and practical readiness. | | **Signal** | What behavior, language, clothing, objects, timing, and care communicate before explanation. | | **Reserve** | Stored capability, restraint, calm confidence, and value that does not announce price. | | **Common** | Democratic access, shared dignity, ordinary decency, and standards taught without elitist mystery. | | **Bearing** | Posture, movement, gaze, voice, entrance, exit, and emotional discipline. | | **Manners** | The habitual moral orientation of care toward other persons. | | **Etiquette** | The learnable rules through which care becomes culturally legible. | | **Protocol** | Institutional and ceremonial order: precedence, introductions, sequence, flags, and occasions. | | **Formation** | Deliberate development of competence, decency, literacy, judgment, and bearing. | | **Standard** | A compact statement of expected quality, conduct, context, or performance. | | **Manual** | Full instruction through which a standard becomes usable practice. | | **Briefing** | Evidence and explanation supporting a cultural thesis or decision. | | **Field Guide** | Help choosing objects, clothing, preparation, or action under real conditions. | | **Utility** | Usefulness, durability, repairability, and friction reduction tested under pressure. | | **Citizen** | The democratic base: an ordinary person formed into competence, dignity, literacy, and service. | | **Trust** | Reliance earned through truthful, coherent, repeated, and repairable conduct. | ## Usage Discipline - Do not use **aesthetic** as a synonym for the whole moral system. - Do not use **comportment** for inward values that have not yet become conduct. - Do not use **character** as a judgment of human worth based upon clothing or polish. - Do not use **grade** as a ranking of persons; grades name mission context. - Do not use **intelligence** as costume, mystique, or proof of secret affiliation. - Do not use **standard** without stating what it measures or protects. Controlled language does not make the system rigid. It gives variation a stable grammar. A vocabulary becomes useful when each word opens the correct door. <!-- BEGIN AMERICAN KNOWLEDGE ROUTER --> ## American Knowledge Router **System:** [[collections/American|American Collection]] · [[wiki/American System|American System]] · [[wiki/American Ethos|American Ethos]] · [[american/American Ethos - Vision and Doctrine|Branch source]] **Concepts:** [[wiki/American System|American System]] · [[wiki/Cultural Grammar|Cultural Grammar]] **Intelligence, defense, and alliance:** [[wiki/American Intelligence and Alliance Interface|American Intelligence and Alliance Interface]] · [[collections/The Civilian Intelligence Marketplace|The Civilian Intelligence Marketplace]] · [[collections/Terrorism, Counterterrorism, and the Intelligence Environment|Terrorism, Counterterrorism, and the Intelligence Environment]] · [[collections/US-Israel Leadership Alliance|US–Israel Leadership Alliance]] <!-- END AMERICAN KNOWLEDGE ROUTER -->
