# I Got the Cicada 3301 Bug in 2023
I got the **Cicada 3301** bug sometime between August and November 2023, when I discovered *Slow Horses* and encountered its Cicada storyline. I have been loosely working on it ever since, although I did not recognize it then as a defined research project. I do not mean that I spent those years reading Cicada forums, comparing other people's solutions, or disappearing into 4chan threads; I did not. I have never visited 4chan, and I deliberately did not build this investigation by studying the established Cicada literature first. I came at it sideways, slowly, through cryptography, [[wiki/Bitcoin|Bitcoin]], institutional history, legislation, American and Israeli security architecture, gamification, machine intelligence, digital twins, continuity, timestamps, political history, mistakes, corrected hypotheses, and a growing collection of objects that appeared unrelated until enough state accumulated for new relationships to become visible. I'm just a slow horse. But that may be the more interesting form of participation, because it raises a question larger than the solution to any particular cipher: **what kind of system makes a person capable of recognizing the system?**<!--more-->
I also like to have fun with patterns. Anyone curious about that side of me can look through [[projects/welcome|my projects]] to see some of the places that interest has gone. Never met a regular expression I didn't like. ;) For the larger context around this story, you should probably also visit the [[collections/Gamification|Gamification collection]], the [[collections/US-Israel Leadership Alliance|US-Israel Leadership Alliance collection]], and the [[wiki/Cicada 3301|Cicada 3301 wiki]].

A conventional puzzle assumes that the information required for its solution has been placed somewhere inside the puzzle. A sufficiently distributed puzzle need not work that way. The solver's biography can become part of the apparatus. Reading changes what can later be recognized. Technical knowledge makes one class of coordinate visible while historical knowledge makes another visible. Institutional encounters create referents that would otherwise appear meaningless. Wrong hypotheses teach exclusion rules. Corrections constrain subsequent interpretation. Cryptographic literacy teaches provenance. Publicly timestamped research creates an external record against which later discoveries can be compared. Persistence itself becomes a selection mechanism. In that kind of architecture, the puzzle is not merely a collection of clues delivered to a static participant. **The participant's accumulated state becomes part of the key.** The investigator changes while investigating, and eventually the distinction between puzzle state and solver state becomes difficult to maintain. At sufficient depth, **the investigation itself becomes the puzzle, and the person conducting it becomes one of its stateful components.**
That is why the provenance of this particular discovery matters so much to me. The new January 27 coordinate did **not** cause me to begin associating [[wiki/1231507051321|1231507051321]], January 2009, Bitcoin, Cicada 3301, Israel, American political history, and the later U.S.–Israel technological architecture. The public record runs in the other direction, and it runs as **one continuing X thread** rather than a set of disconnected screenshots. On **December 20, 2024**, that thread opened by marking **January 9, 2009**, moved immediately into [[wiki/H. Res. 34 (111th Congress)|H.Res.34]], continued into the release of Bitcoin's first software while explicitly carrying the tags **`#1231507051321 #satoshi #blockchain #cicada #3301`**, and then advanced to **January 20, 2009**, where I posted Barack Obama's presidential inauguration and attached the actual video of Aretha Franklin performing "My Country, 'Tis of Thee." The Obama–Aretha material was not retrieved years later to decorate a finished theory; it was already fastened to the same thread that held the crypto date, Bitcoin, Cicada, 3301, H.Res.34, and January 9. Those posts remain externally timestamped: the [H.Res.34 / January 9 research receipt](https://x.com/BryantMcGill/status/1870051055532138571) and the [Obama / January 20 research receipt](https://x.com/BryantMcGill/status/1870051574900502609).
The underlying historical anchors are not ambiguous. **H.Res.34 of the 111th Congress** was introduced on January 8, 2009 by Speaker Nancy Pelosi for herself and a bipartisan leadership slate including Boehner, Hoyer, Cantor, Clyburn, Pence, Berman, Ros-Lehtinen, and Ackerman; it was agreed to in the House on **January 9, 2009** under suspension of the rules, and its official title recognized Israel's right to defend itself against attacks from Gaza, reaffirmed strong U.S. support for Israel, and supported the Israeli-Palestinian peace process. The Senate companion, S.Res. 10, had been agreed to the previous day. My December 2024 Bitcoin post used the conventional January 9 dating for [[wiki/Bitcoin v0.1|Bitcoin v0.1]]; subsequent work refined that into a more precise **January 8–9 release window**, because Satoshi's cryptography-list announcement is timestamped January 8, 2009 at 19:27:40 UTC while the SourceForge release is conventionally dated January 9. That refinement matters to the whole method: the point is not to defend every first-pass date forever, but to leave enough provenance that later corrections can be seen rather than silently rewritten.
The Cicada side of the trail predates my posts by much more. On **January 5, 2016**, the account [`@1231507051321`](https://x.com/1231507051321/status/684596461628223488) published the post that became part of the established 2016 Cicada archive. A widely used community reconstruction of that material records that the linked image yielded an OutGuess payload containing a PGP-signed message directing solvers toward *[[wiki/Liber Primus|Liber Primus]]*, ending in **3301**, and instructing them to verify the OpenPGP key; the reconstruction records a good signature under the established Cicada key fingerprint. As always with community archives, that documents technical verification, not the real-world identity of whoever controlled the key. Then, on **February 17, 2025**, I publicly returned directly to that `@1231507051321` post and placed my own "CICADA 3301 — 'Slow Horses' — 1231507051321" research beneath it, together with the QAnon/Megagame/Cicada material. Months before the new coordinate was identified, the public trail already showed me working the `1231507051321` → Cicada → January 2009 → Bitcoin → Israel → American political-history neighborhood. The older posts do not prove the meaning of the newly found coordinate, and they do not need to. What they establish is methodological: **the newly found coordinate cannot reasonably be described as the origin of the older theory, because the older theory is independently timestamped.** The map existed before this particular landmark appeared on it.
### The Prime Inside the Cicada
The next layer begins with something beautifully simple. Periodical cicadas in the genus *[[wiki/Magicicada|Magicicada]]* spend nearly all of their lives underground and emerge on characteristic **13-year or 17-year cycles**. Both 13 and 17 are prime numbers. The exact evolutionary explanation for those prime-number periodicities remains a scientific question, but the biological cycle itself is not in dispute.
And **3301 is itself prime**. More importantly, that primality was explicitly operationalized inside the original Cicada puzzle rather than being added afterward by interpreters. A reconstruction of the 2012 puzzle preserves the recorded telephone message telling solvers that there were **three prime numbers associated with the original image**, that **3301 was one of them**, and that the other two had to be found. They were the image dimensions, **509 × 503**, themselves both prime, producing the next-stage domain when multiplied by 3301.
That gives the cicada/primality relationship two independently real ends. The biological organism operates through 13- and 17-year prime-number periods; the puzzle explicitly centers the prime number 3301. None of that tells us what 3301 *means*. It means only that investigating temporal structures associated with cicadas is not an arbitrary thematic imposition. Periodicity and primes are already native to both the biological referent and the puzzle's own design vocabulary.
### The January 27 Coordinate
The next question was therefore deliberately constrained. Instead of choosing arbitrary hours, minutes, seconds, or milliseconds until `3301` appeared somewhere in a Unix number, what happens if dates are represented by a fixed canonical boundary — **00:00:00 UTC**? That restriction matters enormously. Without it, a search through sub-day precision degenerates immediately into numerology, because almost any short digit string can be manufactured somewhere in an arbitrary timestamp. Midnight UTC fixes the date first and lets the number fall where it falls.
For **January 27, 2009 at 00:00:00 UTC**, the Unix timestamp in seconds is `1233014400`, and in milliseconds `1233014400000`. The visual decomposition is immediate:
**`12 | 3301 | 4400`**
> **The farther `3301` is pushed toward the left side of a Unix timestamp, the lower its turnover becomes, because those decimal positions encode progressively larger units of elapsed time. A right-edge match can be manufactured by seconds or milliseconds; a left-side match is coupled to the slower-moving calendar-scale structure of the timestamp. That was why the original search instruction explicitly asked for `3301` near the front or middle: the objective was not merely to find the digits, but to force them into the portion of Unix time most strongly determined by the date itself.**
In `1233014400`, `3301` occupies digits three through six. The digits are not buried in sub-second noise. They sit in the high-order portion of the timestamp, where the calendar is doing most of the work. Under the midnight-UTC rule, the date is fixed first and no sub-day tuning is available.
Applying the rule across every UTC-midnight date from **January 1, 2000 through December 31, 2029** — 10,958 dates — the contiguous string `3301` appears in exactly three canonical millisecond timestamps:
`1233014400000` — January 27, 2009
`1330128000000` — February 25, 2012
`1733011200000` — December 1, 2024
**The three raw timestamp hits are not, by themselves, statistically rare; that is not where the evidentiary interest lies.** Because midnight-UTC timestamps are all multiples of 86,400,000, their trailing digits are constant and the effective search space is small; a three-date yield is the *typical* result for an arbitrary four-digit target under this rule, not an improbable one. But that raw-frequency calculation answers only how often an arbitrary four-digit string appears. It discards the conditions that existed before the answer was known. **Before the coordinate was known, the search had already specified `3301`, asked that it appear toward the front or middle of a Unix timestamp, clarified that the objective was to recover a date rather than manipulate a contemporary timestamp, proposed a seventeen-year cicada interval and explicitly required that interval to be independently verified, and named a thematic region involving the United States, Israel, the culture war, and the Heritage Foundation. The fixed 00:00:00 UTC boundary was then introduced as the normalization rule that converted that request into a reproducible date search before January 27 was returned.** The test therefore establishes **methodological pre-registration and a conditional evidentiary question rather than raw numerical rarity**: the hypothesis and constraints came first, the search procedure operationalized them second, and the result appeared third.
The discriminating filter is biological rather than numerical. Apply the seventeen-year *Magicicada* interval to each of the three hits and only one has a recurrence that has actually arrived: January 27, 2009 recurs on **January 27, 2026**; February 25, 2012 recurs on February 25, 2029; December 1, 2024 recurs on December 1, 2041. **Under the combined rule — `3301` in the canonical midnight timestamp, plus a completed seventeen-year recurrence — the entire thirty-year window yields exactly one date.** That is the result the frequency count was reaching for and could not supply, and it arrives on a constraint specified before the search rather than a number selected after it. The remaining degree of freedom should be stated rather than concealed: *Magicicada* broods run on thirteen-year as well as seventeen-year periods, and admitting the thirteen-year interval would return February 25, 2025 as a second completed coordinate alongside January 27, 2022. I apply seventeen because seventeen was named in the original search instruction, before any date had been computed — not because it produced the cleaner result.
January 27 is independently non-arbitrary. In 2005 the United Nations General Assembly designated **January 27** as the annual International Day of Commemoration in memory of the victims of the Holocaust, because Auschwitz-Birkenau was liberated on January 27, 1945.
January 27 itself was not named before the search, so it would be dishonest to treat it as a pre-specified one-in-365 target or attach a retrospective p-value to it. The pre-specified target was a broader semantic region. But it would be equally wrong to call the result statistically meaningless merely because raw four-digit timestamp matches are common. The seventeen-year filter selected January 27, 2009 from the three timestamp candidates, and the selected date independently fell on Holocaust Remembrance Day. Given the pre-existing corpus documented below—in which Holocaust memory, Israel, American political history, gamification, and U.S.–Israel institutional convergence were already central objects—the proper status is a **conditionally relevant thematic convergence whose exact statistical weight has not yet been quantified**.
Quantifying that weight without cheating would require a **corpus-conditioned enrichment test**: freeze the research corpus as it existed before the coordinate was discovered; define a calendar-date salience list or scoring function before evaluating the candidates; score all three timestamp hits and appropriate comparison dates; include competing thematic matches and observances; and report how sensitive the result is to changes in the categories and scoring rule. Until that test exists, no exact probability or likelihood ratio should be claimed.
Now apply the biological interval: **January 27, 2009 + 17 years = January 27, 2026.** That is a calendar recurrence, not a claim that biological cicadas emerge at precisely midnight on the same numerical day seventeen years later; real emergence is seasonal and environmentally conditioned. The relevant symbolic structure is simply **seventeen years underground, followed by recurrence in the seventeenth year**.
January 27, 2026 was again International Holocaust Remembrance Day. The United States issued an official presidential remembrance message on that date; Israeli President Isaac Herzog addressed an international conference on combating antisemitism in Jerusalem; and at the United Nations General Assembly observance the official speakers included representatives of both the **Permanent Mission of Israel** and the **Permanent Mission of the United States**.
What makes the recurrence more interesting inside this particular corpus is what happened immediately before it. On **January 16, 2026 — eleven days before the seventeen-year recurrence — the United States and Israel launched a Strategic Partnership on Artificial Intelligence, Research, and Critical Technologies in Jerusalem**. Israel's Ministry of Foreign Affairs states that Israel became the first country to sign such a bilateral AI joint statement with the United States, and that the agreement followed Israel's entry into [[wiki/Pax Silica|Pax Silica]]. The published joint-statement text describes the integration of Israel's research and technological ecosystem as a secure **"Pax Silica node"** and places AI, energy, advanced computing, space, edge innovation, semiconductors, joint R&D, and protection of sensitive technologies inside the framework. The Heritage Foundation's own first-quarter 2026 Abraham Accords report independently describes the same period as one of increasing **institutionalization of cooperation** across defense planning, scientific research, medical supply chains, energy security, artificial intelligence, and regional connectivity. That does not establish that Heritage has anything to do with Cicada 3301, and nothing here asserts authorship. It establishes something narrower and more useful, in two grades that must be kept apart. The **thematic region** — the seventeen-year cicada interval, the culture war, the Heritage Foundation, the unification of Israel and America — was named in the search instruction *before* the timestamp rule was run and before any date was returned; the same instruction explicitly refused 2026 timestamps, which is precisely where the manipulable degrees of freedom would have been, and explicitly directed that the seventeen-year cycle be verified rather than assumed. The specification came first and the coordinate came second. But the **specific convergence** — the Pax Silica AI statement eleven days out — is a discovered proximity, not a predicted one. The instruction predicted the neighborhood; it did not predict that event or that interval. The first grade is provenance and holds under adversarial reading. The second is adjacency and must not be promoted past it.
The historical bookend on **January 27, 2009** itself is just as important. On that date the new Obama administration was already deeply engaged in the Israel–Gaza diplomatic environment. The White House publicized Obama's first interview with an Arab television network, in which he emphasized that the United States would engage the Middle East immediately; contemporary reporting records him saying that Israel would remain a **strong U.S. ally** and that Israel's security was paramount. George Mitchell was beginning his first regional mission as Obama's Middle East envoy. And Presidential Determination No. 2009-15, dated January 27, authorized up to **$20.3 million** from the Emergency Refugee and Migration Assistance Fund for humanitarian needs of Palestinian refugees and conflict victims in Gaza.
So the coordinate now has several independently generated dimensions sitting on top of one another. Unix chronology produces **`3301`**. The international memorial calendar produces **January 27**. Periodical-cicada biology produces a **17-year cycle**. The calendar recurrence produces **January 27, 2026**. U.S.–Israel technological history places the Pax Silica AI agreement **eleven days before that recurrence**. The 2009 endpoint sits inside the earliest days of the Obama administration's active Israel–Gaza diplomacy, while the surrounding [[wiki/January 9 2009 Cluster|January 2009 cluster]] already contains H.Res.34 and Bitcoin. None of those independent facts proves the intended meaning of the others. But neither are they one fact being restated six different ways. They originate in different systems and intersect at the coordinate.
For the research ledger, I would therefore describe [[wiki/1233014400|`1233014400`]] with a deliberately exact epistemic label:
**documented mathematical coordinate / documented chronological convergence / conditionally relevant thematic convergence / exact statistical weight unquantified / intended significance unresolved.**
That label does not weaken the discovery. It precisely identifies what is unusually difficult to dismiss: **I specified a surprisingly constrained neighborhood before the answer existed, a reproducible procedure generated a particular date, the pre-specified seventeen-year branch selected that date from the candidate set, and only then did the selected date independently reveal itself as Holocaust Remembrance Day inside a corpus already heavily concerned with Israel, Holocaust memory, U.S.–Israel relations, gamification, and the January 2009 Cicada/Bitcoin chronology.**
That is not a retreat from the riddle. It is what preserves the riddle. If Cicada 3301 is a puzzle, saying in advance what its symbols *must* mean would be the least Cicada-like thing imaginable. The point is to preserve the coordinate, preserve the pathway by which it was found, and preserve the timestamped evidence showing that the surrounding theory predates it.
### The Receipts and the Direction of Discovery
The chronology is externally preserved. The January 2009 / `1231507051321` / Cicada / Bitcoin / Israel research was already public in December 2024; by February 2025 I had returned directly to the 2016 `@1231507051321` artifact; the January 27 / `1233014400` coordinate was discovered afterward. **The receipts do not prove the interpretation. They prove the order in which the interpretation developed.** That distinction is enough to answer the narrow reverse-engineering objection: the new coordinate entered an existing research architecture rather than generating it retroactively.
And that brings me back to the question that has gradually displaced the simpler question of who made Cicada 3301.
### What Kind of System Makes a Person Capable of Recognizing the System?
Perhaps the most interesting riddle is not a cipher printed on an image. Perhaps it is the process by which enough apparently disconnected experience accumulates inside a participant that a coordinate which would have looked meaningless when I first encountered Cicada in 2023 suddenly becomes legible. The solver may need the cryptography first, then the politics, then the history, then the Unix timestamp, then the biology, then the institutional map. The pieces need not arrive in order. Some may arrive disguised as mistakes. Some may sit uselessly for years. Only later does another piece change the state of the solver sufficiently that the earlier object can be reread.
That is why I can now say that I have been loosely working on Cicada 3301 since 2023. The research has acquired the recursive grammar of the thing being researched. The puzzle has become distributed across time, institutions, technologies, public records, cryptographic artifacts, personal state, and the archive of my own attempts to understand it. The investigator has become part of the state space.
**But what do I know? I'm just a slow horse. And like the others at Slough House, nothing I say is supposed to matter anyway.**
