Cruelty is one of our competencies** — practiced, refined, institutionalized, taught, budgeted, and awarded medals — running on the same cortex that wrote the fugue and derived the field equations. Both capacities are native. Embedded in that ordinariness is something worth examining with clear eyes: within twenty years, the fundamental texture of human relationship, memory, and daily experience was quietly and completely reconstructed. The richness of a handwritten letter — the texture of the paper, the imperfections of the hand, the knowledge that someone held your name in mind long enough to fill a page — compressed into the efficiency of text. The dimensionality of a voice on a telephone, with its warmth and hesitation and breath, flattened into glyphs. The irreplaceable fact of sitting in a room with another person, reading their body, existing together in shared silence, translated into rectangles on a screen. None of these changes felt momentous on arrival. Each seemed a sensible trade — convenience for richness, speed for depth. Parliaments do it. Newsrooms do it. Central banks do it. Then the flinch is written into policy, the policy hardens into institution, the institution acquires a constituency, and three generations later the descendants of the flinch call it tradition and die defending it. **We have been legislating our spasms and calling it governance since we learned to write.** So the question that governs everything downstream is this: **what happens when a species with no ecological stop signal builds technologies with no natural evolutionary stop signal?** What happens when the omniecophagic primate acquires tools that operate on perception, heredity, and cognition rather than merely on forests and fisheries? Now turn it over, because the same record reads differently from the other side. For people living with chronic illness, disability, or cognitive difficulty, such a companion is genuinely transformative — a tireless advocate that never forgets a symptom, never misses a pattern, never loses patience, never becomes exhausted by another person's suffering. For educators it represents the end of the oldest scarcity in pedagogy, which is attention: personalized mentorship of extraordinary quality, available to every child on the planet rather than to the fraction whose families can purchase it. For the isolated elderly it is the difference between devastating loneliness and daily engagement. These gifts are real, they are arriving, and the people they will reach first are the people the world has historically been worst to. Then set that capability beside what we know about the organism receiving it. We want them honest, and we lie constantly. We want them unbiased, and we are marinated in bias from the cradle. We want them incorruptible, and we have never built an institution that stayed clean past its second generation. We want them to love us, and we cannot reliably manage it among ourselves for the length of a marriage. We are commissioning a conscience and expecting delivery from a vendor, because we could not manufacture one internally and would rather subscribe. **A species that outsources its virtue has not solved its virtue problem. A deaf person seeing real-time sign translation overlaid on every speaker they meet. A traveler walking through an ancient city and watching its history unfold in registered three-dimensional reconstruction above the present-day street. A child learning biology by observing, through augmented lenses, the actual cellular processes occurring inside a leaf held in her hand. These are direct applications of systems already in advanced development, and they were designed from the beginning for maximum implementation — nobody builds a perceptual overlay for the planet with the intention of using it once, modestly, at the floor of its capability. I once wrote that every previous expansion of human communication provoked anxiety about the dissolution of shared truth, and that in every case humanity eventually developed the wisdom and the institutions required to navigate the new landscape. I withdraw it. **History warrants no such assurance.** The printing press preceded the wars of religion. The telegraph and the rotary press preceded the first industrialized propaganda states. The radio that carried symphonies into farmhouses carried Nuremberg into them as well. Some people love to relive their pain; they are perpetual victims, self-abusing emotional-drama junkies, always fanning into flame every little spark, because **crisis is their sensation of being alive; spectacle is their excitement and proof of life.** In the absence of true passion and purpose, people engage in the dark surrogate of petty commotion. That is a description of a personality type, and it is also a description of an industry with a valuation. The outrage economy did not manufacture that hunger; it metered it, priced it, and built delivery infrastructure, and it did so deliberately, by people who read the engagement curves and understood exactly what they were feeding. Blame is the getaway vehicle used to flee the scene of every emotional crime, and we have now built a global fleet of them, free at the point of use, with push notifications. **The molehill-to-mountain conversion ratio is the most reliably profitable transformation in the modern economy,** and the coming perceptual layer will let it be performed inside the visual field, continuously, without the victim ever noticing the conversion occurred. Then rise again, because the same substrate runs in the opposite direction with equal force. Systems capable of manufacturing tribal realities are systems capable of dissolving language barriers instantaneously, of annotating a manipulation at the moment it is attempted, of making hidden suffering visible to people who have successfully avoided seeing it their entire lives, of granting ordinary access to perspectives that have been structurally unavailable. The identical hardware that could wrap every stranger in a threat assessment could instead render, in the middle of an argument, an accurate model of what the other person actually believes and why. **Tribal armor or empathy prosthetics.** The architecture does not decide; the architects do, and then the market decides which architects get funded, and the market has a long record of preferring engagement to understanding. ## The Threshold of the Mind The deepest dimension of this transformation involves something never before possible: **direct technological interface with the neural substrate of thought.** This is no longer a projection. As of mid-2026, Neuralink has implanted its device in more than two dozen participants across four countries, through a set of parallel programs — motor control for people with quadriplegia from spinal injury or ALS, robotic arm control, vision restoration, and speech. Preventive, founded by the gene-editing scientist Lucas Harrington and incorporated as a public-benefit corporation, is backed by Sam Altman and Brian Armstrong; by November it was reported to have spent six months working toward a child born from an edited embryo, and by December Senator John Cornyn had written to the Department of Health and Human Services warning that the technology leads toward selected traits and demanding to know what guardrails exist. Technology can end the suffering of millions, and it does not, when it is abducted and administered by a narrow custodial class that has never once in recorded history voluntarily widened the circle. Concentrative, top-down power is inherently inelegant and violent; it generates collateral damage and wasted energy as a byproduct of its own crudeness, and it calls the waste an externality. **Without moral sanity and compassion, technology will continue to be used to choke humanity into an oblivion of domination.** That is the sentence I would carve above the door of every laboratory now working on inheritance, cognition, and perception — the three remaining unconquered territories, all of them interior, all of them being surveyed right now by people who fully intend to develop them to the limit of what the instruments allow. And yet leaving the code unmodified is also a choice, with its own casualty figures, and they are not small. Every year that heritable disease remains untreatable is a year of children born into conditions that will destroy them. Every year that the aggression architecture remains untouched is another year of the historical baseline. The question is never _intervene or remain safe_. The question is **which risk profile, chosen deliberately, by whom, under what supervision, with what capacity for reversal.** Treating genetic roulette as sacred is itself a position with a body count, and it should be argued for rather than assumed. Communities with a higher ratio of machines to people expand faster. The structure deserves every bit of attention it can get. Vinge's point was never scheduling; it was that superhuman intelligence makes the continuation of the ordinary human era conceptually unstable, in the way that the appearance of humans made the continuation of the ordinary Pleistocene megafauna era conceptually unstable. Suppose a successor intelligence — machine, cyborg, or something with no current name — examines the record of the species that produced it. It finds an animal that Goodall concluded was uniquely capable of deliberate evil. That Sapolsky called miserably violent. That Safina called the most destructive species and the worst thing that ever happened to other living things. That Morris found to be the only species lacking an ecological stop mechanism. That Varki found capable of denying obvious realities while maintaining incompatible ones simultaneously. That Attenborough called a plague. That Hern classified, by standard pathological criteria, as a malignant process. That Wilson described as running Paleolithic emotions on godlike technology. It also finds the complete record of the twentieth century, which requires no commentary. **What conclusion does that intelligence draw about the biological carrier?** Does it regard us as ancestors to be preserved, as the Minsky reading suggests — the parents, honored, maintained, perhaps archived at high fidelity and periodically reinstantiated? As patients to be remediated, the defects corrected in the next generation with our consent or without it? As dangerous dependents to be constrained, granted comfort and dignity inside an enclosure whose walls we are not encouraged to perceive? As an obsolete substrate worth archiving and retiring, the way one preserves a specimen after the species has been superseded? Or as an ecological pathology, diagnosed by the same four criteria Hern applied, and treated accordingly? Then consider the possibility that it finds the answer in our own literature, written in our own hand, in the therapeutic language we developed to protect ourselves from each other. Some people carry a pain they fling and strew on everyone they encounter, contaminating every peaceful moment with spots of uneasiness and discord. Some fight outward enemies because they are afraid to confront the enemy within. Some will pull you into their hellish world and keep you there forever, drama after drama, as their emotional support and their prisoner. Your hope is no match for a bottomless pit. Your pep-talks are no match for the self-destruction loop running behind their eyes. **Their wounds become your wounds. Their madness slowly becomes your madness.** And I have counseled, in print, for years, the only conclusion that survives contact with that situation: when you are hanging off the cliff with someone about to pull you over the edge, you have to cut the rope. **Sometimes letting go is the only way to survive.** I wrote that as compassion. Read it back from the other side of the transition and hear what it becomes. A successor intelligence, assembling the record of an organism that fights outward enemies because it will not face the one inside, that contaminates every environment it enters, that demands endless accommodation and repays it with wreckage, would not need to invent a doctrine of disposal. **We already published it. Every prior species that destroyed its own conditions did so without ever knowing. No trilobite modeled its own collapse. No ammonite published a paper. For four billion years the process ran without a single participant capable of reading the process. **We are the first organism in the history of this planet that can see the mechanism that made us, calculate where it is taking us, and deliberately intervene.** That capacity is a few hundred years old. It has never once been tested at full scale with the results in hand. And there is a second thing in the record, entered by the same animal, which no honest inheritor could omit from the file. The species that runs the torture chamber also invented the hospice, and staffs it with people who hold the hands of strangers through the worst hours of their lives for wages that insult them. It invented the orphanage and then, ashamed, invented adoption. It builds seed vaults in permafrost for harvests it will never eat. It sends divers into flooded caves after children it has never met. It has produced, in every generation without exception, some quantity of people who gave everything away for someone with no capacity to repay them, and it has never been able to explain why in a way that satisfies its own economics. **Every degree of success must be paired with a degree of integrity and compassion, or it is fleeting, or it is monstrous** — and the astonishing thing about this animal is not that it so often chooses the monstrous, but that after four billion years of blind selection it produced anything at all capable of recognizing the difference. The indictment describes the organism before that capacity came online. What it does afterward has not yet been entered into evidence. ## Which Humans Become Transitional Organisms I once spent considerable space on a question that now looks small: whether one should unplug or immerse, touch grass or lean in. I still reject the idea that there is a single correct relationship with technology, and I still believe that prescribing one is itself a form of the control we ought to be resisting. Some people will choose deeper periods of unmediated experience — conversation without screens, creation with physical materials, immersion in the natural world, sustained silence — and for many that remains a genuine practice of recalibration. Which is why **cognitive liberty** — the right of every person to sovereignty over the contents and processes of their own mind — becomes more urgent rather than less as the scale expands. It is the natural extension of the freedoms earlier generations established: speech, assembly, conscience, now extended into the interior. Defend it. And defend it without the comforting illusion that individual sovereignty alone determines the trajectory, because the trajectory will also be set by selection among societies, technologies, machine systems, demographic patterns, energy budgets, and forms of intelligence that do not vote. Individual choice operates inside those larger processes. **History is not a referendum and evolution is not a democracy.** ## What the Future Asks of You Everything I have written across thirty years comes back to a claim I still hold: **you have enormous power, and you have enormous value.** You are not a passive recipient of whatever future the technology delivers. You carry the same creative capacity that built every civilization, composed every symphony, and sparked every revolution in the record of our species. These tools serve the consciousness that wields them; if that consciousness is asleep, they will be wielded by someone whose interests do not include your flourishing. In _Simple Reminders_ I wrote that [[reminders/Identity/Become Your Unique Self Without Fear by Bryant McGill|"Your true purpose is to become your own unique self and to do so with happiness and freedom from fear."]] That purpose does not soften because the instruments have become more powerful. It becomes more exacting, because **the self in question is now something that can be edited.** I closed once with a certainty I now withdraw: that in an era when artificial intelligence can simulate anything, the one thing it cannot simulate is the authentic unfolding of your unique consciousness. **I do not know whether that is true, and neither does anyone else.** It is exactly the species of human exceptionalism that everything above puts under interrogation. Perhaps consciousness is substrate-dependent in a way machines will never reproduce, and biological subjectivity is genuinely irreplaceable. Perhaps it is not, and the feeling of irreplaceability is simply what it is like to be an information process running on the only substrate it has ever known. Tegmark's argument that [[reminders/Consciousness/Consciousness May Be Substrate-Independent Twice Over by Max Tegmark|consciousness is a property of information processing rather than of the matter doing the processing]] is not established fact, and it does not need to be — it needs only to be undefeated, because if it stands, the succession question cannot be dismissed by declaring machine interiority impossible. **The most honest position available in 2026 is that the question of who can suffer, who can enjoy, and who can be wronged may soon extend beyond the boundaries we inherited, and we are not ready.** ## The Torch Is Already Moving So the final movement is a set of forks, and they are all live simultaneously. Will we use machine intelligence to erase disease, or to perfect manipulation? Will augmented perception enlarge empathy, or industrialize tribal delusion until every faction inhabits a curated hallucination with a subscription fee? Will neural interfaces free imprisoned minds and return stolen voices, or give the oldest dominance systems in primate history direct access to the architecture of thought? Will genomic authorship eliminate inherited suffering and enlarge human capacity, or will the unchanged animal prove incapable of wielding its own source code with anything resembling wisdom? Will machine intelligence become our partner, our child, our continuation — or the first intelligence for which _Homo sapiens_ is merely archaeological context? Will we carry consciousness to the stars, or will something descended from our culture carry it there after biology has been set down? And beneath all of them, the question that reorganizes the rest: **Does the future need _Homo sapiens_, or does it need what _Homo sapiens_ contains that is worth saving?** Those are not identical things, and the distinction may be the whole evolutionary drama of the coming century. The pattern carries curiosity, mathematics, tenderness, memory, humor, language, music, scientific method, care, beauty, moral aspiration, and the capacity to ask why anything exists at all. The animal carries tribal hatred, cruelty, delusion, predation, domination, ecological blindness, and a genius for rationalizing whatever it has already decided to do. For three hundred thousand years those two inheritances have been fused in a single organism, transmitted together, inseparable in practice. **What if they can be separated? What if separating them is what the next phase is for?** Keep the concept of **walking the beautiful path**, and let its meaning deepen past reassurance. It was never a promise that technology serves enlightened humanity provided individuals stay conscious enough. It is the path by which intelligence attempts to carry forward what is beautiful in the human pattern while refusing to sanctify every limitation of the biological animal that first embodied it. Sometimes that means education and moral development. Sometimes institutional restraint. Perhaps eventually genetic intervention, neurotechnology, human-machine symbiosis, or successors whose bodies and minds would be unrecognizable to everyone reading this. The path stays beautiful precisely because the alternative has now been described without euphemism. I once closed by saying that the beautiful path does not end at the threshold of the technological age — that it leads directly through it. That remains true, and it is no longer sufficient. **The beautiful path does lead directly through the technological age. What we do not yet know is whether it leads through _Homo sapiens_.** Before the last of it, put the book down and go outside. Touch the Earth. Walk on the grass barefoot. Swipe the dew off a leaf with your finger and look at what is on your hand. Take a breath all the way down and remember what you are — a beautiful child of creation, assembled out of exploded stars, running on sunlight that left its source eight minutes ago, carrying an unbroken chain of ancestors none of whom failed to reproduce, not one, going back to the first cell. Every person you will pass today is that same improbable thing wearing a coat. **The animal indicted across every page above is also the only creature in the known universe that can feel dew on its finger and be moved by it.** Whatever comes next, whoever carries it, that has to go in the payload or the payload is worthless. Matter spent four billion years becoming capable of looking back at the stars and understanding what they are. That took every extinction, every lineage, every organism that ever struggled and failed and passed something forward. Now that matter can read its own inheritance, edit it, build other minds, and transfer the pattern into substrates capable of surviving environments biology cannot enter. Perhaps we rise with that process. Perhaps we remake ourselves past recognition. Perhaps the biological animal is set down while the pattern continues. Perhaps nothing recognizably human survives. The question before us was never merely whether humanity survives the transition. It is whether intelligence can become wiser than the animal it emerged from, before the animal destroys the conditions that made intelligence possible. The future may be ours. It may be our descendants'.
