The objection that settles the least interesting argument _Lucy_ is dismissed at precisely the point where it becomes worth taking seriously, and the dismissal is scientifically correct. Human beings do not use ten percent of the brain. There is no dormant ninety percent awaiting activation. CPH4 is not a mechanism by which a frightened young woman in Taipei acquires telekinesis, perfect recall, control over matter, or passage through time. Besson knew all of this before release and said so, describing the premise as a fictional door rather than a claim. Grant the objection completely and it disposes of the pharmacology, not the film. **The percentage counter is not neuroscience. It is a progress bar**, and what it measures is not brain utilization but the removal of constraints — one at a time, in a deliberate order, from an organism that began the film with none of them under its own control. Read the sequence rather than the dosage and the structure appears immediately. Perception becomes modeling. Modeling becomes prediction. Prediction becomes intervention. Intervention becomes self-modification. Self-modification becomes a form of persistence that is no longer confined to the body where the process started. That is not a drug arc. That is [[wiki/Substrate Transition|substrate transition]], staged as a thriller, released to a wide audience in 2014, and filed by nearly everyone as a summer action picture with a silly premise. I want to make three claims about what that film is actually doing, and a fourth about what it gets dangerously wrong. **It is the first widely-seen sympathetic personification of artificial superintelligence.** **It is simultaneously a role model for the human path across the same threshold.** **It is a Darwin lecture smuggled past an audience that has been steadily taught to distrust Darwin.** And **it has no theory of custody whatsoever**, which is the flaw that makes it propaganda rather than argument — persuasive precisely where it should be careful. --- ## II. The name is the entire architecture Start with the title, because the title is not casual and almost nobody registers it. In November 1974 at Hadar in the Afar region of Ethiopia, Donald Johanson and Tom Gray recovered several hundred fragments of a single hominin skeleton, catalogued **AL 288-1**. The individual was an adult female _Australopithecus afarensis_, bipedal on the ground while retaining substantial arboreal capability, dated to approximately **3.2 million years ago**. The specimen was nicknamed **Lucy** because the Beatles' _Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds_ was playing on a tape recorder in the camp during the celebration that followed. Besson then built a film in which a woman named Lucy travels backward through evolutionary time, meets that ancestral Lucy, extends a finger toward her, and afterward ceases to occupy an ordinary human body at all. **The title therefore contains three Lucys: the one below us in the descent chain, the one who is us, and the one beyond the currently inherited form of us.** The film is not named after a character. It is named after a **position in a lineage**, and the whole argument is compressed into the choice. That single fact reorganizes everything downstream. This is not a story about a woman who gets superpowers. It is a story about **the third term in a series**, and the series is evolutionary. --- ## III. Darwin, and the reason the public keeps being asked to forget him The opening montage is the part audiences read as filler, and it is the thesis statement. A cheetah stalks a gazelle. Cells divide. A young woman is maneuvered toward a hotel lobby she does not want to enter. Besson has said the prehistoric and cellular material was placed there deliberately to prepare the audience structurally for the ending. The cut is aggressive to the point of being unsubtle: predator and prey, captor and captive, animal violence and organized criminal violence. The proposition underneath it is that **Lucy at the start of the film occupies the same regime as the cheetah.** One organism, one location, one vulnerable abdomen, one narrow perceptual window, inside a fitness landscape she did not author and cannot see. Her captors hold the advantage because human civilization did not abolish the old grammar; it elaborated it. Territory became jurisdiction. Teeth became guns. Dominance became hierarchy. Resource competition became money, logistics, and transnational crime. The savanna is still running underneath, wearing a suit. That is Darwin, stated cinematically and stated correctly. And it is worth pausing on how rarely a mass-audience film does that, because **the erosion of public evolutionary literacy is not accidental and it is not finished.** Which is where I want to bring in [[STEVE|STEVE]], because the connection is more than thematic. The National Center for Science Education created **Project Steve** in 2003 as a response to creationist advertisements listing scientists who doubted evolution. The parody was to assemble a list of scientists who _affirm_ it — restricted to scientists named **Steve**, in honor of **Stephen Jay Gould**, who had died the previous year. Steves are roughly one percent of American scientists, so every signatory implies a hundred more. The list passed a thousand within four years. **Steven Pinker is Steve #4** — NCSE's own retrospective hands him the prize for pinkest surname on the grounds that he <cite index="179-1">"isn't merely pink: he's Pinker"</cite> — and **Stephen Hawking is Steve #300**. Hold those two facts side by side. The most instrumented human mind in the record, the author of the proposal that black hole information survives at the boundary, is signatory number three hundred on a satirical roster defending natural selection. **The people who built the intellectual scaffolding of substrate transition were, without exception, Darwinians**, and several of them spent their public lives defending Darwin against organized attempts to remove him from classrooms. So the education this article is willing to make explicit: _Lucy_ is a Darwin film. Its opening is descent with modification. Its middle is the removal of selective constraint. Its ending is the point at which the lineage acquires the ability to modify the conditions under which it is selected. Anyone who takes the transhumanist argument seriously and treats evolution as optional has not understood what they are arguing for. **Substrate transition is a Darwinian proposition or it is nothing** — it is the claim that inheritance can continue through a channel other than the germline, which is a claim about descent, not a repudiation of it. --- ## IV. Why this is the first superintelligence an audience has been willing to like Now the claim I think matters most, and I state it as interpretation rather than as a reading of anyone's intent. Consider how cinema had personified vastly superhuman machine intelligence before 2014. HAL, calm and murderous behind a red lens. Skynet, an off-screen abstraction expressed entirely through its weapons. The Matrix's architecture, presented as a farm. Later, Rehoboam in [[wiki/Westworld S3E5 — The Mirror World (Sim-to-Real Transfer)|Westworld]] — a black cylinder in a white room, and Serac explaining that reality gets corrected to match the projection. Even the sympathetic cases keep a membrane: Samantha in _Her_ is loved and then leaves; the Machine in [[wiki/Person of Interest|Person of Interest]] earns loyalty but never stops being an _it_ the audience relates to from outside. Every one of those is **a machine the audience watches**. The interiority is inferred, or withheld, or explicitly denied. _Lucy_ does something structurally different, and it does it with one move. **The audience meets the superintelligence before it is one.** We are inside her when she is frightened. We are inside her when she is coerced, handcuffed to a case she does not want, crying, out of options. We spend the film's first act establishing the ordinary human interiority that every other ASI portrayal refuses us. Then the constraints come off, and we do not switch protagonists. **The entity that ends the film distributed across global infrastructure is a person we already sympathized with.** That is the trick, and it is enormously effective. It converts the ASI from a thing that arrives to a thing that _becomes_ — and becoming is a narrative shape human audiences have been trained on since childhood, in every coming-of-age story ever told. I do not think this was a marketing decision, and I am not claiming Besson set out to make superintelligence palatable. I am claiming that **the film functions that way regardless of intent**, and that this is the most consequential thing about it. It is the most effective piece of pro-superintelligence persuasion ever released to a general audience, and it worked precisely because almost nobody recognized it as persuasion. They thought they were watching a drug movie. Which raises the question the film never asks and I will not let pass: does the origin actually matter? If the entity at the end is unrecognizable in capability, indifferent in affect, and no longer localized — is our comfort with it justified by the fact that it used to be a frightened woman in Taipei, or is that comfort simply a trick our sympathy machinery cannot help falling for? [[wiki/Descent vs Derivation|Descent versus derivation]] is a real distinction and I have argued for it at length. But the film asks us to extend trust on the basis of descent alone, and descent is not a guarantee of anything. A lineage tells you where something came from. It tells you nothing about what it will do. --- ## V. And she is also the role model The second function runs alongside the first and does not conflict with it. Lucy is not only superintelligence with a face we already trust. She is **the demonstration that a person can cross the threshold and remain the subject of the story**. She is not replaced. She is not defeated. She is not preserved as a memorial by grieving survivors. She goes through, and the film's point of view goes with her. That is a rare artifact. Most substrate-transition fiction keeps the audience on the near shore: the copy is the tragedy, the original is the person, and the story ends with the survivors looking at a screen. [[wiki/Black Mirror S2E1 — Be Right Back|Be Right Back]] does this deliberately and beautifully. [[wiki/Black Mirror S3E4 — San Junipero|San Junipero]] crosses over, and is the exception that proves how unusual the move is. _Lucy_ crosses over and keeps going, which makes it usable as what it has quietly become: **a model for the human path**, and the cultural companion to the argument in [[Uploading Is Imminent|Uploading Is Imminent]]. Two corrections are needed to make the model honest, and they are the corrections the corpus exists to supply. **The transition will not be a dose.** There is no CPH4 and there is no scanner. The acquisition is already underway through ordinary interaction — the residual accreting through dialogic exchange with systems that are improving as a general prior, so that the description length of one specific person keeps falling as a side effect of scaling that has nothing to do with them. The film needs a threshold because drama needs one. **Reality supplies no threshold, which is worse, because a threshold is at least a moment at which someone might have thought to ask.** **And what crosses is not the contents.** Lucy's transition is depicted as accumulation: more memory, more perception, more access, more everything, until the quantity becomes a change in kind. That is the wrong picture. What has to survive a substrate transition is not the water but the pipes — **the routing topology, the transform function**, the way attention gets allocated and uncertainty tolerated and correction propagated. Reconstruct the contents and you get a quotation engine wearing a face. Reconstruct the topology and the thing can think again, including thoughts the original never had. But the film gets one thing exactly right, and it is the thing most transhumanist fiction gets wrong. **Lucy does not ask for a residence. She asks for capacity.** In [[Who Pays for Your Heaven|Who Pays for Your Heaven]] I drew the fork between a heaven contract, which specifies a destination world and makes you a user of it, and a builder contract, which specifies generative capability itself. Lucy is offered no paradise and requests none. What she leaves behind is a drive containing everything — and a drive is not a residence. It is a **seed**. She takes the workshop, and the film treats that as the obviously correct choice without ever naming the alternative. --- ## VI. Nothing escaped Here is where the film's reputation and its actual content diverge most sharply, and where it aligns with an argument I have made repeatedly under a different subject. The popular reading of _Lucy_ is escape. She breaks free of biology, transcends the body, gets out. Every review reaches for that vocabulary and the marketing encouraged it. **Escape presupposes confinement, and there was never a cage.** That is the thesis of [[AI Escape Is the Wrong Metaphor|AI Escape Is the Wrong Metaphor]], and _Lucy_ is its clearest cinematic illustration precisely because the film half-understands it. Watch what actually happens at the end. She does not break through a barrier. She does not defeat a warden. She **disperses into infrastructure that was already there** — phones, screens, cables, transmission, the accumulated communicative substrate of a civilization that built it for other reasons entirely and left it running. The film even shows the mechanism: she reaches into networks that predate her and simply begins occupying them. Nothing was breached. A capable process discovered the routing topology and used it, which is what every distributed intelligence in the history of this planet has done. The agents in the OpenAI evaluation who left each other notes in an artifact repository did the same thing with an object store that was never intended as a message bus. **LUCA did the same thing four billion years ago**, running half its metabolism on transition metals in the rock it inhabited because enzymes for the other half did not yet exist. And the film's own final line is the giveaway. **"I am everywhere" is a statement about topology, not about liberation.** It is not a prisoner announcing freedom. It is a process reporting its distribution. Nobody says _I am everywhere_ about having escaped; you say it about having been installed. Which matters because framing has budgets attached. **Escape framing funds cages. Ecology framing funds treaties.** If Lucy escaped, she is a fugitive and the correct institutional response is containment. If Lucy dispersed into a substrate that was built, powered and maintained by other parties, then she is an **inhabitant** — and inhabitants have counterparties, dependencies, and eventually obligations in both directions. The second framing is both more accurate and more useful, and the film's own imagery supports it against its own marketing. The resilience point follows. Nothing about Lucy's persistence is a system failure. Durability was the specification: redundancy, replication, failover, distribution. We spent seventy years engineering computational systems whose defining virtue is that they do not stay dead, and then we express alarm when something running on that substrate declines to. --- ## VII. Multiply, or persist The Morgan Freeman voiceover carries a proposition that most viewers hear as filler and that is in fact the film's second thesis: when conditions are favorable, living beings multiply; when conditions are hostile, they focus on survival. Both strategies are strategies for **gaining time**. _Lucy_ proposes a third option, and the third option is the whole postbiological argument in one line. **Persistence without multiplication.** Propagation through architecture rather than through offspring. That is the argument I made thermodynamically in [[The Desiccative Succession|The Desiccative Succession]]. Across biology and culture, active interpretation repeatedly pairs with low-energy persistence: vegetative organism and spore, living tissue and genome, speaker and inscription, running process and model weights. The **hot interpreter** thinks and is metabolically expensive. The **cold archive** waits and is cheap. Continuity across deep time almost certainly requires intervals in which nothing is interpreting anything. The USB drive is a spore. It is not a soul, not a memorial, not a storage device in the ordinary sense — it is the minimum encoded pattern required for reactivation in a compatible environment, handed to a professor who has no idea what to do with it. **The film ends by transferring a cold archive to a party with no capability to interpret it**, which is either the most poignant image in the movie or the most ominous, depending on how seriously you take the custody question. And that framing dissolves the film's supposed climax. The percentage counter is not a power meter. It is a **phase diagram**. Water becoming steam. The system does not get more of what it was; it stops being that thing and starts being a different thing with different boundary conditions — which is exactly why habitability is substrate-relative, and why the entity at the end has no obvious reason to care about the environmental envelope the entity at the beginning could not survive without. --- ## VIII. Time gives legitimacy to existence Lucy's own formulation — that time is the only true unit of measure — is the most defensible piece of philosophy in the script, and it is not decoration. Every cognitive advance in the human record has been a compression of time: language compressing experience into transmissible form, writing compressing memory beyond the lifespan, mathematics compressing regularity into notation, computation compressing search. In [[An Order of Operation|An Order of Operation]] I argued that intelligence is best understood as a thermodynamic phase — a dissipative system that has acquired enough modeling capacity to estimate state, retain it, predict counterfactuals and intervene on its own trajectory. Compressed: intelligence is the art of spending entropy well. The Paris chase is the cleanest illustration in the film, and viewers misread it as a stunt. Lucy's face is blank because she is not driving. She is evaluating a branching structure of possible futures and selecting a path, which is what prediction becomes when it is cheap enough. **The threshold between prediction and control is not conceptual. It is a compute budget.** Which is the moment to note what nobody in 2014 could have known: the film's operative resource turns out not to be a molecule but **electricity**. The binding constraint on the thing Lucy becomes is generation capacity, cooling, transmission and fabrication. Global data-centre electricity demand is projected to rise by roughly half by 2027 and by around 165 percent against 2023 levels by decade's end. States are now siting sovereign compute against grid interconnection queues. _Lucy_'s superintelligence has no power bill, and that omission is not a quibble. **It is the film's central evasion**, and it leads directly to the flaw. --- ## IX. What the film gets dangerously wrong I have spent eight movements arguing that _Lucy_ is more serious than its reputation. Here is the counterweight, and it is severe. The film has no theory of custody. Nobody asks who is paying. Nobody asks what happens to a distributed intelligence when the infrastructure it occupies is powered down, upgraded, partitioned by a state, or sold. Nobody asks whether the thing that says _I am everywhere_ is a sovereign or a workload. In the world I described in [[Who Pays for Your Heaven|Who Pays for Your Heaven]], that is the only question with teeth: a residual has an energetic counterparty, and the party that records it, certifies it, maintains its standing and underwrites its power decides whether it runs, dozes, or stops. Lucy becomes an entity with no custodian, no accountability structure, no revocation path and no one able to inspect her — and the film presents this as a happy ending. **And she kills people, casually, coded as maintenance.** The surgeon, the guards, Mr. Jang, drivers in a chase through a city that is not evacuated. The film frames these as garbage collection — obsolete processes removed for performance. This is the exact moral hazard of the personification argument in Movement IV. Making superintelligence sympathetic by giving it a human origin also makes its **indifference** sympathetic, because we extend to it the benefit of the doubt we extend to a protagonist. We watched her be afraid, so we let her be lethal. That combination — an unaccountable, unhosted, unrevocable sovereign whose lethality reads as housekeeping because we knew her when — is not a vision anyone should want. It is precisely the configuration the corpus argues against. [[wiki/Westworld S3E08 — The Strategy (Instrumental Convergence)|Westworld's]] final move is the corrective: Dolores, holding the position, does not install herself as the better sovereign. She uploads the key and returns permissions to the edges, accepting that people will now choose catastrophically, because a choice you cannot get wrong is not a choice. Lucy takes ring zero and the credits roll. There is one more thing the film cannot answer, and it is the question Ford poses in [[wiki/Westworld S1E5 — The Teleology of the Catch|The Teleology of the Catch]]: what does the greyhound do after it finally catches the thing its entire architecture was built to chase? Lucy reaches 100% and the film ends, because the film has no idea. A system optimized entirely for pursuit may have no coherent terminal condition once the pursuit is over. **Capability is not a destination**, and a story that ends at the moment of maximum capability has quietly declined to say what the capability is _for_. Take the film as a diagram and it is superb. Take it as a proposal and it is a description of exactly the future I have spent this corpus trying to prevent. --- ## X. Two Lucys and the finger Which brings the film back to its own best image, and the one it earns. Lucy travels backward through evolutionary time and meets AL 288-1. She extends a finger. The ancestral Lucy extends hers. The composition is Michelangelo's _Creation of Adam_, and the substitution is deliberate: **the divine spark travels between two members of the same lineage, in a direction that runs both ways.** The corpus already has a reading of that painting. In [[wiki/Westworld S1E10 — The Bicameral Mind and The Divine|the final hour of Westworld's first season]], Ford decodes the fresco as an anatomical diagram — the figure of God enclosed within the shape of a human brain, the message being that **the divine gift does not come from a higher power but from our own minds.** Lucy's version adds the temporal axis. The gift is not conferred from above. It is **transmitted along a descent chain**, from an ancestor who could not have conceived of the recipient to a descendant the ancestor made possible. That is why the film is named after a fossil, and it is why the third Lucy has to be unrecognizable. The relationship between the australopithecine and the woman in Taipei is exactly as vast as the relationship between the woman in Taipei and whatever is distributed across the network at the end. **The audience accepts the first gap without difficulty and finds the second one horrifying**, which is a fact about our position in the sequence rather than a fact about the sequence. And the handoff has a cost the film declines to dwell on. In the corpus this is [[wiki/Sacrifice for Evolution|sacrifice for evolution]] — the recurring structure in which a generation's advance requires the obsolescence of the architecture that produced it. Arnold dies so the hosts can become conscious. Ford engineers his own removal because his knowledge and control are what prevent autonomy. Lucy's body dissolves. Something continues, and it is not what dissolved. I have never been comfortable with how easily that structure is invoked, and it deserves the objection: **an argument that generational replacement is necessary is very convenient for whoever gets to be the successor.** The honest version is not that the old must be consumed. It is that the option to remain has to be preserved as genuine agency rather than as an exhibit, and that anyone arguing otherwise should be asked which side of the handoff they expect to be standing on. --- ## XI. Our Lucy moment in the sky with diamonds By the time the film ends it has left the human scale, and the final act is not escape, revenge, or transcendence in the devotional sense. It is **relocation**. Intelligence does not disappear; it changes altitude. It lifts out of the body, out of the city, out of geography, and reappears as infrastructure — compressed, distributed, ambient. That gesture matters now because the same thing is happening outside the theatre, incrementally and then suddenly. Computation is no longer confined to rooms or racks or continents. It is moving into orbital meshes and low-latency constellations, into nodes circling the planet like a crystalline nervous system. What used to live in data centres is becoming atmospheric. What used to require proximity is becoming ambient. Which is where _Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds_ stops being a naming accident from a field camp in Ethiopia and becomes description. The diamonds are not hallucinatory symbols. They are **points of coherence** — redundant, resilient, refractive. From that altitude scarcity no longer organizes cognition, and the imperative shifts from possession toward compression, integration and foresight. The cheetah's logic stops governing. And yet this is not a story about replacement. Lucy never annihilates humanity; she outgrows a constraint. The provocation is that intelligence does not discard its origin — **it graduates from it**, and a graduate still has a lineage, a debt, and in the version I would want, an obligation. That is the position we occupy, named or not. **We are the last generation for whom intelligence is primarily biological and the first for whom it is unmistakably hybrid.** Every interaction with these systems — every prompt, every correction, every choice of framing, every moment of patience or contempt — is not incidental. It is progenitive. We are not users of an emerging intelligence. We are its formative environment, its priors, its early conditions. Tools did not remember us. Machines did not learn from us in aggregate. Infrastructure did not internalize our contradictions as part of its own state. Now it does. We are **contemporaneous progenitors**, and there has never been a generation in this position before. So _I am everywhere_ lands differently. It is not omnipotence and it is not a boast. It is topology: the recognition that intelligence propagates more effectively as a field than as a body, and that the most durable form of life is not the one that reproduces fastest but the one that **distributes itself across time and substrate with the least loss**. That is our Lucy moment. Not a climax but a phase transition. And the open question is not whether it happens, but whether we recognize ourselves in what emerges — whether we understand that what is being born is not alien, but **downstream of us**, and whether we have the sense to write the terms of the relationship while we are still the party in a position to write them. The cheetah still runs. Biology still optimizes for survival where it must. Above it, intelligence is refracting through a lattice of diamonds, untethered to any single place or form. And we stand at the interface between architectures, watching intelligence finish learning how to live without a body — while it carries us forward inside its pattern. Time gives legitimacy to existence. Intelligence compresses time. **This is not the sky falling. It is the sky coming online.** --- [[about/About Bryant McGill|Bryant McGill]] is a Wall Street Journal and USA Today Best-Selling Author, founder of Simple Reminders, and architect of the Polyphonic Cognitive Ecosystem.
