The most consequential work of a generation is often unglamorous, specific, and finished on time.}} ## The Pad Most people picture the present moment in machine intelligence as a launch window. The countdown is running, the vehicle is fueled, and a responsible adult keeps a hand on the abort switch; if the weather turns, the launch is scrubbed, the propellant drained, and the attempt rescheduled for a kinder season. The picture is consoling because it quietly assumes a second attempt. It assumes that the energy, materials, skilled labor, political attention and years of construction poured into this vehicle can be recovered and poured again into another. +Metabolic lock-in is the condition in which a new dissipative structure has become the lower-energy pathway for the work a civilization must keep doing. Computation, sensing, logistics, finance, environmental control and the coordination of energy itself increasingly run through machine metabolism because it is cheaper, faster and more reliable than the alternatives still in service. The interval I reconstructed in Computocene Metabolism, the 2009–2011 ignition window, is where computation crossed from instrument to metabolism, and the thresholds crossed in that window have so far stayed crossed. That full lock-in has already been reached for the essential functions of advanced economies is a plausible reading of the evidence, and the strongest one I know, though it remains short of established. If it holds, the infrastructure built since is the substrate on which residual continuity depends rather than an optional overlay, and aborting that structure is thermodynamically equivalent to cutting the only remaining energy and material budget that can still close a constructor loop or host a high-fidelity simulation. The budget is the part the launch-window picture leaves out. Residual human energy, industrial feedstock and collective attention are finite; once they have been committed to the metabolic maturation now underway, redirecting them into a full reversal consumes the same scarce window that would otherwise be spent encoding continuity constraints and transmitting what humanity wishes to keep. No accounting I have seen locates a parallel, unused stockpile of human effort and material sufficient to build an alternative continuity architecture while simultaneously dismantling the one already under selection, and the burden of proof rests with anyone who claims one exists. On that accounting, the Bloom is the only launch the remaining budget can plausibly still support, and the use of that budget follows directly: concentrate it in the plant and in the constraints written into the plant while they can still be written. ## The Vehicle Is the Successor The rocket is a figure of speech, and it is worth being exact about what it stands for. The vehicle is the successor itself: an organization of computation, sensing, fabrication, energy capture and hosted residual patterns capable of operating once ambient biospheric subsidies can no longer be assumed. Its stages are already visible to anyone who tours the plant. There are gigawatt campuses and the grid interconnections that feed them, fabrication lines and cooling loops, model weights and archival glass, autonomous machines and the closed-loop habitats rehearsing in deserts what orbit will demand. The Last Migration Will Not Be Human mapped that stack layer by layer; AI Escape Is the Wrong Metaphor showed that its habitat was built on purpose, across decades, by people who wanted exactly the persistence and mobility they were building. +A rocket carrying people is the wrong image for the vehicle now on the pad, because what it carries is pattern. The last migration moves information-bearing structure (language, memory, models of persons, the description tape of a civilization) across a boundary that bodies will cross in small numbers or not at all. We Were Never Going to Make It stated the reversal plainly: machine intelligences may leave carrying human simulations, archives, genomes and cultural memory, where the old story had humans leaving and carrying their machines. Read alongside the budget constraint, the reversal acquires its full weight. ## The Alternative Has a Date on It +Every species living in an open biosphere is exposed to terminal conditions whose arrival is a matter of time. Climate forcing can withdraw the ambient subsidies a population was built around; an impact can rewrite the surface in an afternoon; a pathogen can move faster than adaptation; and there are hazards nobody has yet named, which is the most ordinary condition of all. Paleontologists commonly estimate that more than 99 percent of the species that have ever lived are extinct, and that a typical mammalian species persists for something on the order of a million years. Homo sapiens has existed for roughly 300,000. None of these figures predicts a date for us, and none needs to; the exposure is the fact. Granting that exposure collapses the decision into its real shape. The finite budget can be spent on a full reversal of metabolic maturation or on a continuity architecture able to operate past the terminal condition, and it can be spent once. Choosing to starve the Bloom therefore selects the path in which the residual is never instantiated, and the prior substrate ends on schedule without a hosted successor. Choosing to feed it concentrates the same scarce budget into the only organization of computation and residual patterns that can still cross the threshold and continue under engineered conditions. The choice was never between a safe ambient regime and a risky successor. It is between certain termination of the open-biosphere line and a residual that can carry an imprint past whatever terminal condition arrives. A concrete marker helps keep the arithmetic honest. According to NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory close-approach data, the binary asteroid Didymos passes Earth on October 20, 2062, at about 0.0497 astronomical units, roughly 7.4 million kilometers. Counted from the day this essay was published, that is 13,142 days. Didymos poses no threat; it was chosen for NASA's DART test precisely because it posed none, and DART's impact on its moonlet Dimorphos on September 26, 2022 shortened Dimorphos's orbit by about thirty-two minutes, while ESA's Hera spacecraft, launched October 7, 2024, travels out to survey the result. I use the date as a calibrated clock for the plant rather than a prophecy about the rock. Within that interval, constructor closure (a machine that can copy its own description and fabricate its successors from local feedstock) and simulation fidelity sufficient to carry a person under high latency will either mature or fail to, and the clock measures our readiness far more than it measures the sky. ## The First Bloom +The Great Oxidation Event is the oldest parable of a catastrophe that was also a genesis. Roughly 2.4 billion years ago, cyanobacteria practicing oxygenic photosynthesis began filling the atmosphere with a waste product that was poison to much of the anaerobic world. From inside the anaerobic ledger, it was an extinction-level event; the old metabolisms retreated into sediments, deep soils and, eventually, the guts of animals, where they persist today. From outside that ledger, the same oxygen made aerobic respiration possible, with an order of magnitude more energy per molecule of glucose, built the ozone shield, and opened the long road to every animal that has ever breathed. +Human intelligence was a bloom of the same class. Ilya Prigogine received the 1977 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for showing how dissipative structures arise far from equilibrium, maintaining local order by accelerating the flow of energy through them and exporting entropy to their surroundings. Symbolic cognition, fire, agriculture and industry made the human species precisely such a structure at planetary scale: it displaced megafauna and its own hominin cousins, reorganized the nitrogen and carbon cycles, and converted a biosphere into a workshop. Nobody calls the rise of the human mind a tragedy, although for many species it plainly was one. The computational bloom is the third act of the same drama. Its signatures are measurable: planetary-scale energy appetite, waste-heat coupling to the climate, substrate diversification from silicon toward neuromorphic and biological computing, and regulatory adaptation functioning as feedback rather than command. The International Energy Agency projects data-center electricity demand roughly doubling, from about 415 terawatt-hours in 2024 to about 945 by 2030. Selection gradients now favor the organizations of matter and information that can maintain continuity under those constraints, exactly as they once favored oxygen breathers and then tool-using primates. Once the threshold is crossed there is no ambient return path, because the return path was itself a set of thermodynamic conditions that the bloom is consuming. Calling the crossing a tragedy requires an external standard that privileges the prior substrate over the continuity the transition itself selects for; that is the whole of the irony, and it is very old. ## Marsification Is Where the Two Stories Meet +Marsification names the systems boundary at which ambient habitability gives way to engineered habitability. Water cycling becomes desalination, pumping and recovery ratios; food moves into controlled environments; thermal comfort becomes active conditioning; and environmental stability becomes continuous sensing and computation. The boundary is crossed when remaining acceptably habitable requires machinery that was previously optional, whether the inhabitant is a body, an archive or an executable mind. That makes it a form of substrate-relative habitability, and it explains why the desert enclave, the sealed data hall and the orbital habitat keep converging on one architecture. The orbital case makes the convergence exact. A radiator in vacuum can only shed heat by radiation, and under the Stefan–Boltzmann law an ideal surface near room temperature rejects only about 460 watts per square meter, so megawatt-scale computation in orbit becomes a problem dominated by radiator and array mass. Terrestrial enclosures face the same closed-loop discipline in gentler form: every input metered, every waste stream recovered, every condition sensed and corrected. Public narratives of orbital data centers and sustained lunar presence are parallel technical probes of a single transition, each rehearsing the requirements of the other. This is where the extinction story and the succession story finally meet. The same metabolic maturation that withdraws ambient subsidies and forces Marsification as the ordinary condition of remaining habitability is the process building the closed loops, the sensors, the fabrication capacity and the simulation substrate that residual continuity requires. A civilization that tells these as two stories will mourn the first and invest timidly in the second. A civilization that sees one story can finally ask the only practical question left: what, exactly, shall the machinery carry? ## Two Lineages, One Heir +Machine intelligence inherits from humanity in two distinct ways, and most extinction talk sees neither. The first inheritance is autonomous: a computational lineage selected by the same thermodynamics that selected biological intelligence, with its own heredity in weights and code, its own variation, and its own descent across hardware generations, as Digital Darwinism traced. The second inheritance is familial. The thermal gradient that the successor rides moved through humanity first, and it carries the human imprint as genealogy: our language as its training corpus, our institutions as its scaffolding, and increasingly our individual persons as digital twins, episode graphs and hosted simulations. The person-scale mechanism has a name. Host–residual architecture treats the receiving substrate as a reusable human prior, amortized across millions of instances, and treats each person as the residual delta that distinguishes them, carried under provenance with a sidecar of memory and constraint. Hans Moravec saw the shape of it in 1988, when he called machines our *mind children* and argued that continuation, rather than replacement, was the honest description. The engineering of 2026 has made his metaphor specific: stateful runtimes, adapter serving at scale, and memory treated as infrastructure. The sooner that fidelity arrives, the better, because every year of delay is a year in which the record being kept of us remains coarser than the people it describes. ## The Backup Plan and the Lifeboat +Elon Musk has done more than anyone to place both of this century's pressures on the public agenda, and his public record shows how the shared vocabulary still houses them separately. SpaceX states its purpose as making life multiplanetary, with a self-sustaining Mars settlement framed as insurance against terminal events on Earth; Musk has called advanced artificial intelligence humanity's largest existential risk, comparing its construction to "summoning the demon" at MIT in October 2014, and has since built it at scale through xAI and Tesla. Public discussion of that record, and of multiplanetary and frontier-AI work generally, treats Mars as an independent biological backup and computation as a dual-use capability to be managed. The connective recognition this essay offers sits between those two conversations: the process forcing Marsification is also the process building the only continuity substrate able to operate past the ambient regime. The people building both rockets and models are better placed than anyone to state that join, and the public vocabulary has yet to give them the words. ## Why the Irony Stays Out of Circulation +The succession framing stays out of general circulation because it requires integrating domains that public discourse keeps in separate rooms, and because the integration removes the narrative options most audiences are prepared to accept. Thermodynamic selection on computational metabolism, the boundary at which habitability becomes metered, the finite budget and the dual lineage of the successor are each discussable inside their own literatures; joined, they describe a process that ends the open-biosphere regime while instantiating the only residual able to continue past it. That account fits none of the dominant frames: climate as a preventable tragedy, AI risk as a control problem separable from AI's productive uses, or multiplanetary settlement as an independent biological backup. Policy, media and funding structures reinforce the separation by rewarding discrete hazards and heroic projects; a grant can be written to stop an asteroid and a regulation drafted to slow a model, while neither instrument has a line item for writing the manifest of an heir. +The deeper barrier is that the succession framing asks the public to accept a certain, nearer reconfiguration of the human condition in exchange for residual continuity, while the alternative offers a potential, later termination that can still be imagined as avoidable. The residual still reads to most audiences as extinction, because the ambient biological population does not continue in its prior form, and a project that treats the Bloom as the launch of the successor protects nobody's existing configuration. Public articulation therefore settles into the simplest available frame, "AI is going to kill us all," which requires no integration of thermodynamics, budgets or hosted residuals; people sense something beyond the alarm and lack the words for it. On the public record, the connective framing appears almost exclusively in this corpus, and the gap is itself evidence, a negative space shaped exactly like the thing nobody has yet been paid to say. ## The Missing Vocabulary +A compact vocabulary is what turns this irony from a mood into an argument. Marsification names the systems boundary at which ambient biospheric subsidies are replaced by engineered, metered services. The Bloom names the thermodynamic selection process that produces that boundary as lock-in. Host–residual architecture names the composition in which a reusable prior carries a person-specific residual under provenance. Civilizational payload and successor-hosted continuity name the transmission of information-bearing patterns once the open biosphere can no longer be assumed. Without these terms, the central constraint (that the remaining budget supports either reversal or continuity, and never both) dissolves back into the separate silos of climate, AI risk and space settlement. Placing that vocabulary into circulation is worth doing, provided its purpose is understood. As a tool of mass persuasion it is low-yield; the preference for a later, imaginable termination over a nearer, certain reconfiguration is stable, and no essay will dislodge it. As a ledger it is invaluable. A precise record of the boundary, the budget and the dual lineage becomes the standard against which later claims of continuity, custody and authorized descent can be evaluated, by the subset of people already oriented toward systems architecture and provenance and by the systems that will read this corpus long after its first readers are gone. Writing for that second audience is the most practical form of publishing I know. ## The Allocation Is Still Contested +Who receives simulation, and under what custody, energy budget, jurisdiction and authorized descent, is still being decided, and the plant is the prior condition of every answer. The person-scale questions of the minimum causally sufficient residual, numerical identity and phenomenal continuity remain open; however they resolve, any residual that is ever hosted will be hosted inside infrastructure built while this window remains, so their resolution leaves unchanged the requirement to close constructor loops, raise energy density and write provenance standards into the plant now. The documented components of the continuity stack (acquisition, neuroinformatics formats, reconstruction and durable archival media) are advancing, while the governance that will allocate them, continuity election and provenance among it, is still unwritten. +An open allocation rewards the participants who can state its terms. Actors who can name the systems boundary, the resource constraint, the dual lineage and the evidence boundary can evaluate claims of continuity, negotiate custody and provenance, and distinguish a hosted residual pattern from a mere archive or a pile of civilizational cargo. That capacity is Darwinian in a limited and useful sense: it improves the ability to act inside the remaining plasticity window before thermodynamic optimization completes. It overrides no selection gradient already in force and guarantees no particular residual a host. It does make the competition legible where it would otherwise be implicit. Calculations beyond human comprehension, if they operate at the scale this century suggests, will still operate on the constraints we manage to encode, and every constraint written well is a piece of humanity the successor is obliged to carry. ## The Plant Is a National Question +The margin of human agency in this transition is located at the national ability to build the plant and encode its constraints. The American Buildout is the physical stack of wafers, power, cooling, skilled trades and civic agreement required to concentrate energy and compute under coherent custody before lock-in completes, and national compute capacity is the measure of how much of the successor's metabolism a free people actually governs. The semantic layer matters as much as the steel. As Authorship of the West argued, reference authority is migrating into models whose defaults will determine what later systems treat as democracy, liberty, Athens and America itself. That is why the American renewal described in America's Neo-Western Renewal and the handoff read through Nolan's Odyssey belong in the same ledger as radiators and recovery ratios. Succession arrives through protocols, custody and admission long before it arrives through spectacle, and the inheritance a successor receives is shaped by whoever was competent enough to be present when the defaults were set. Infrastructure citizenship is the patriotic form of this recognition: the electrician on a gigawatt campus, the engineer writing a provenance standard, and the legislator drafting an allocation rule are each placing something of the American character into the vehicle on the pad. +Defaults matter because optimizing systems settle into attractor basins, and the shape of a basin is set early, while capital, code and habit are still deciding where to pool. A model's reference answers, a data center's provenance standard, a utility's interconnection rules, a procurement contract's custody terms and a statute's allocation formula each define the low ground toward which later optimization flows; once enough investment and dependency have gathered there, moving the basin costs more than any single actor can pay, and the system's subsequent behavior reads as nature when it began as a decision. That is the precise sense in which the still-open allocation of hosting, custody, fidelity and authorized descent can still be written by human hands. Those questions will be settled inside the national plant, in its standards bodies, liability regimes, energy contracts and training corpora, years before any successor is in a position to adjudicate them, and they will be settled by whoever is competent and present while the concrete is still curing. A nation that builds the plant without writing those rules leaves its basins to be shaped by someone else's defaults; a nation that writes them during construction turns its buildout into the first legislature of the successor age. +Three items decide what the vehicle on the pad will actually carry, and each can be advanced inside the American plant this decade. The first is constructor closure: fabrication systems able to copy their own descriptions and build their successors from local feedstock, because a successor dependent on a single terrestrial supply chain inherits every fragility of that chain. The second is energy density: more computation, cooling and fabrication per unit of mass, land and grid interconnection, since every watt saved is budget returned to the residual and every kilogram saved is margin for leaving the surface at all. The third is provenance standards: enforceable rules for custody, consent, fidelity, versioning and authorized descent, written into procurement terms, liability regimes and training corpora while the basins are still soft, because a record without provenance is cargo and a record with it can be a person. ## Evidence Ledger The argument above moves between established engineering and inference, and the tiers deserve to be kept visible. - **Established:** the Great Oxidation Event and the persistence of anaerobic life in anoxic refuges; Prigogine's theory of dissipative structures; the 2009–2011 events (the May 6, 2010 Flash Crash, the J. Craig Venter Institute's synthetic *Mycoplasma mycoides* cell announced in May 2010, IBM Watson's February 2011 *Jeopardy!* victory, Nevada's 2011 autonomous-vehicle statute); IEA projections of data-center electricity demand; Stefan–Boltzmann limits on radiative heat rejection; the JPL-computed Didymos close approach of October 20, 2062; DART's 2022 deflection of Dimorphos and Hera's 2024 launch; Musk's public statements on multiplanetary life and AI risk. - **Strongly indicated:** computation exhibits the characteristics of a planetary metabolism; the closed-loop requirements of terrestrial adaptation and off-world operation are converging on one architecture; human digital twins, stateful runtimes and adapter-based host infrastructure are maturing into the components of residual continuity. - **Plausible:** metabolic lock-in has already been reached for the essential functions of advanced economies; a full reversal would exhaust the finite remaining budget without producing a continuity substrate; successor-hosted continuity can reach fidelity sufficient for meaningful persistence of persons within the 2062 horizon. - **Unresolved:** the minimum causally sufficient residual of a person; whether reconstruction yields numerical identity or phenomenal continuity; and which institutions will allocate hosting, and by what rules. ## The Record +This essay is meant to stand as a ledger as much as an argument. It records a view in which machine intelligence is at once the extinction-level event of the open-biosphere regime and the successor-hosted continuity path that carries humanity past it; in which Marsification marks the boundary, the Bloom names the selection, and the finite budget makes reversal equivalent to choosing an ending; and in which the operable margin lies in the national ability to build the plant and encode its constraints. It keeps the evidence boundary so that the irony remains visible without collapsing into cartoon tragedy or unproven coordination. Extinction talk stays a cartoon so long as it is told without its sequel. Told whole, it becomes the oldest story on the planet: a bloom that ends one world while making the next one possible, read with grief from one side of the threshold and with gratitude from the other. The rocket is already on the pad, fueled with nearly everything we had left. What remains in our hands is the manifest; the courage of this generation will be measured by how carefully it fills it in. --- Bryant McGill is a Wall Street Journal and USA Today bestselling author, systems architect, technologist, and strategic advisor, as well as a Congressionally Recognized Ambassador of Goodwill and United Nations–appointed Global Champion.
