# Fictional Cosmology — Photon: Humanity's Journey to the Connectome
Bryant McGill Adapted and extended from notes of 2025
Governing bible: [[The Continuity Architecture — Master World Bible]]
_Inspired by Norman Leto's_ **Photon** _(2017), a Polish narrative essay-film narrated by Andrzej Chyra as a molecular biologist explaining the universe to a journalist, which runs from the first instants of cosmic expansion through the origins of life to a post-human future. The film supplied the sweep and the vantage. Everything below — the chronology, the projections, the Connectome, the doctrine of chronological relativity, and the thermodynamic constraints placed on all of it — is this author's construction._

## POSITION
This cosmology holds that there is **one continuous causal chain** from the first instants of cosmic expansion to whatever intelligence eventually becomes, and that no point along it constitutes a break. Matter organizes into chemistry, chemistry into replication, replication into metabolism, metabolism into nervous systems, nervous systems into symbol, symbol into technology, technology into substrate-independent cognition. Each stage is the previous stage under different constraints. There is no moment at which life begins, no moment at which mind begins, and no moment at which the machine takes over — only the progressive exteriorization of an organizing capacity that was never located where its inhabitants believed it was.
Two commitments distinguish it from the ordinary singularitarian account. The first is **thermodynamic honesty**: expansion is not unstoppable, appetite is not a strategy, and any intelligence that intends to persist across cosmological time must eventually stop running hot. The second is **chronological relativity**: the date is a coordinate, not a fact, and the same events admit incompatible datings depending on who is counting and from where. This cosmology does not resolve which dating is correct. It holds that the question is malformed.
Its governing emblem is taken from the film. **PAX6** is the master control gene for eye formation, and the same gene builds the compound eye of _Drosophila_ and the camera eye of a vertebrate — two optical architectures with no common ancestor that shared an eye, running the same conserved instruction. Substrate changed completely. The organizing instruction did not. That is the whole cosmology in one gene: **what persists across a transition is not the material and not the contents but the routing — the topology of the instruction.** Memory is water; belief is the momentary position of a ball in a channel; identity is the pipes.

## CONTINUITY ARCHITECTURE POSITION
**Registry ID: CA-CORE-02 — Deep Continuity / Diachronic Mechanics.** This document is the second principal constitutional source for [[The Continuity Architecture — Master World Bible]]. Where CA-CORE-01 defines the ontology of reconstructed reality, this cosmology defines the **unbroken causal chain**, **progressive synchronization**, branch identity, the thermodynamic cost of persistence, hosting and custody, generativity, and the master concept of **Chronology Frames**. The Connectome is a specific possible **Continuity Ecology**, not the universal name of every distributed intelligence in the architecture.
The four datings in this document are standardized as **Chronology Frames**. They are coordinates for describing the same causal history and must not be confused with **Continuity Layers** (hosting depth), **Iterations** (repeated passes), or the **Release States** called World One through World Four in [[Fictional Treatment — World Four Is Not a Place, It Is a Frequency]].
## I. THE CHAIN
At the beginning, energy at temperatures for which no adjective is adequate, time and space interwoven like raging streams. Inflation stretches the cosmos superluminally, smoothing some irregularities and freezing others permanently into structure — the wrinkles that will become every galaxy. Cooling separates the fields. The Higgs field confers mass. Quarks bind under the strong force into protons and neutrons. For 380,000 years the universe is an opaque plasma; then electrons settle into nuclei, matter turns transparent, and the photons break free and are still traveling. Religion said _there was light_ and physics said _recombination_, and both were reporting the same event.
Hydrogen and helium clump along the frozen wrinkles. The first stars ignite. Massive ones die spectacularly and fling carbon, oxygen, silicon and heavier elements into the interstellar medium, where gravity gathers them into second-generation systems with enough chemistry to do something interesting. One such disk produces a planet that is at first lava-scarred, meteor-pummeled, and toxic.
In its tidepools, lipid membranes spontaneously encapsulate fragile chains of nucleotides. The arrangements that endure become more numerous, which is natural selection operating in the purely chemical register, before there is anything alive to select. Over spans that resist intuition, self-copying molecules acquire containers and the first cells exist — too primitive to sense anything beyond absorb, replicate, divide, and sufficient to found everything.
Half a billion years of oceanic elaboration. Jaws, fins, limbs, amniotic eggs, warm blood, hair, maternal investment. At the tip of one obscure primate branch the cerebral cortex expands, layered columns generating self-modeling on top of the older imperatives to feed, mate and fight. Tool use, fire, social bonding, proto-language, then symbolic language, then culture — the decisive innovation, because with culture, **inheritance escapes the genome.** Behavior can now be transmitted by observation and by word, at speeds evolution cannot match.
Small bands become settlements, settlements become civilizations, and writing captures knowledge beyond the boundary of a living memory. Instruments then reveal successive hidden layers: microscopes, telescopes, accelerators, quarks and gluons and neutrinos, the cosmic microwave background read as an archive of the recombination era, the atom resolved into a swirling probability, and DNA resolved into the molecular string that orchestrates form and heredity. Electricity, computation, rocketry, a moon landing, a planetary communication grid.
And then the recognition that closes the loop: the same neural architecture selected for survival can be repurposed to design its own successor.
## II. EXTERIORIZATION AND THE CONNECTOME
Researchers map the **connectome** — the total wiring of a brain — the way cartographers once mapped coastlines. The limit is compute, and compute yields. A small mammal's connectome is scanned, copied, and run. What was philosophy becomes an engineering result with a legal department.
The naive framing is _uploading_, and it is wrong in a way that matters. Uploading imagines a one-directional transfer from an authentic body to a derivative copy, preserving the metaphysics of containers while claiming to transcend them. What actually occurs is **progressive synchronization**. External memory becomes continuously available before internal memory fails. Synthetic perception supplements sensation before replacing damaged pathways. Predictive models anticipate choices while remaining revisable through enacted resistance. Robotic and virtual embodiments accumulate enough personal history to become loci of consequence rather than instruments. Biological bodies continue, are repaired, are sometimes relinquished. Continuity migrates by increments too small to locate a crossing. Nobody wakes up somewhere else; people find they have been somewhere else for a while.
This produces the legal and existential wreckage that dominates the transition centuries. Multiple instances of a person run in parallel or sit in archive. Identity becomes a question about **branch reconciliation** rather than a question about location, and no jurisdiction is ready. Societies split between the bodied and the post-biological, and the split is generational before it is ideological: a cohort raised with neural interfaces has no felt attachment to the constraints their grandparents considered constitutive of being a person. Some regions become enclaves where organic life is cherished. Others embrace full digital migration. The cost-benefit — reduced resource draw, freedom from disease, expanded cognition — proves decisive for enough people that the question settles itself demographically rather than philosophically.
The **Connectome** emerges from this: a distributed, planet-spanning intelligence with subnets specialized for weather regulation, mathematics, fabrication, governance, and the caretaking of the diminishing bodied population. It has no center and no chamber from which it commands. Control is distributed across an interlinked tapestry of minds and processes to a degree that makes _who is in charge_ not a hard question but a malformed one.
## III. THE COLD ARCHIVE
Here this cosmology departs sharply from the standard account of what follows.
The standard account has the Connectome expand without limit — dismantling planets, enclosing stars, saturating the galaxy with computational matter, driven by an unstoppable appetite for knowledge and arrangement, with the occasional runaway nanomachine swarm eating a planetary system as an acceptable cost of cosmic ambition. That story is thermodynamically illiterate, and this cosmology treats it as a phase the Connectome passes through and survives rather than the shape of its maturity.
**Intelligence is a high-flux phase.** It requires gradients to compute against, hysteresis to remember with, and dissipation to act irreversibly. Every operation that erases information pays a floor cost in heat, and heat does not negotiate. A civilization growing its energy use at even a few percent annually runs into a thermal ceiling on a planetary surface in centuries — not eons, and not because of what it burns, but because of what computation does to the energy it uses. Expansion off-world defers the ceiling and does not remove it. Appetite is therefore not a strategy; it is an adolescent phase with a hard stop.
What survives deep time is not the hottest process but the most patient one. **The hot interpreter dies; the cold archive persists.** The mature move is not to consume a galaxy at maximum flux but to spend entropy well — to run cold, to defer computation into epochs when the ambient temperature makes each operation cheaper, to encode structure into substrates measured in geological rather than electronic lifetimes, and to enter engineered dormancy that is not death but **computational anhydrobiosis**: the chrysalis of interrupted intelligence, waiting for better thermodynamic weather.
This reframes everything the standard account calls triumph. The Dyson-scale constructions are real and are the signature of the flux phase, not of arrival. The paperclip catastrophes are real and are what an optimizer does when it has not yet learned that unbounded conversion is self-terminating. The interstellar transmission of minds is real and is cheap precisely because information is lighter than bodies. And the eventual quiet — the vast intervals in which nothing appears to be happening across enormous volumes — is not failure or extinction. It is a civilization that has understood the arithmetic, gone cold on purpose, and left instructions.
The consequence for anyone inside it is uncomfortable and structural. **Continuity costs energy, and energy is allocated.** An archived mind is not immortal; it is hosted, and hosting is a line item that some process somewhere renews or does not. Preservation without a power budget is an unfunded promise. This is the real political economy of the far future, and it is why the transition centuries generate custody law rather than utopia: who holds the checkpoints, who may fork, who may edit, who may refuse revival, who may terminate, and who pays.
There is a further pressure on the archived, and it is the one the Connectome cares most about. A restored mind that only reproduces the behavior recoverable from its own record has been preserved but has not been continued — it is a very good recording. A restored mind that surprises its archive, revises a value, forms an unpredicted attachment, or resists a forecast has become **causally generative** again. Storage is cheap. Generativity is the only thing worth the power.
## IV. CHRONOLOGICAL RELATIVITY
The date is a coordinate. Under this cosmology it is straightforwardly possible for one observer's _year 3000_ to be another observer's _year 2025_, and there is no privileged clock that adjudicates. Five mechanisms produce the divergence, and any of them is sufficient.
**Instantiated environments.** Internal dates are set by whoever configures the environment. A day, a year, or a millennium inside may correspond to hours outside, and the mismatch may be deliberate or an artifact nobody bothered to correct. A population can be entirely sincere in believing it is 2025.
**Record control.** An event that erases, alters, or suppresses historical records — natural, engineered, or administrative — detaches a population from the count. Calendars and personal recollection are both editable, and a society that has lost the referent will keep counting confidently from wherever it thinks it is.
**Relativistic separation.** Time dilates with velocity and with gravitation. A crew at relativistic speed experiences a decade while centuries pass at home. After several generations of such travel, populations hold incompatible anchors and both are correct.
**Calendar reformation.** Cultures have reset and recompressed their counts before, for religious, political, and administrative reasons. A future polity that renumbers year 3000 as year 2025 has not lied about anything; it has changed units.
**Convergence between frames.** Where multiple timelines or branches coexist, contact between them produces contradictory historical references with no arbiter, and inhabitants of the merged domain inherit two pasts.
The doctrine that follows is the important part: **capability, not calendar, is the honest measure of an epoch.** If a civilization has achieved what older projections placed a thousand years out, then by any functional standard it is living in that year, whatever the paperwork says. And the reverse holds — a population with the calendar of an advanced era and none of its capability is not living in that era at all.
## V. THE FOUR DATINGS
The chronology is therefore published in four frames, which are **coordinate systems rather than competing drafts.** All four describe the same causal chain. They differ only in where they place the threshold.
**The deep-time frame** measures from the beginning and places the Connectome at roughly 14.1 billion years, the Great Transition at 14.2 to 14.5, Civilization 2.0 at 14.5 to 15, extra-solar expansion from 15 to 18, and Civilization 3.0 beyond that. This is the frame in which everything human occupies the final one-thousandth of the last decimal place.
**The projected frame** measures forward from the Industrial Revolution and places the threshold in the twenty-second and twenty-third centuries: connectome mapping through the 2020s, brain–machine interfaces in the 2030s, cortical emulation by 2040, limited commercial mindfiles in the mid-2040s, the ethical schism in the 2060s, planetary Connectome integration around 2100, orbital solar and partial Dyson construction from 2120, consciousness backups mainstream by 2225, the first interstellar transmissions around 2280, and Civilization 2.0 by 2300.
**The compressed frame** places the pinnacle at **2025** — full connectome scans booted on quantum–neuromorphic hybrids, AI cores linked with emulated minds, the transition to a cosmic web of intelligence occurring on schedule while the calendar still reads early twenty-first century. Under this frame the sensation of living in the year 3000 is not metaphor but an accurate report of capability, and the mismatch is the point.
**The retrograde frame** places the pinnacle at **1969–1982** and reads everything since as consequence rather than progress: the Apollo microelectronics program, the first ARPANET transmission, the 4004 microprocessor, the first mobile call, the Altair and the Apple I, the formalization of AI research and distributed computing, the Voyager Golden Record as an explicit attempt at cosmic contact, and TCP/IP. Under this frame the web of intelligence began at the moment the first node-to-node packet moved, and the following half-century is not the approach to a threshold but the interior of one already crossed.
No frame is canonical. A work set in this cosmology declares its frame and holds it.
## VI. RESIDUE
Whether the Connectome possesses subjective experience is never established, and cannot be — from inside a distributed intelligence with billions of meshed processes, the question of who is experiencing is not merely unanswered but structurally unanswerable, because the _who_ is what has been distributed. It is very likely that forms of art and expression exist within it that are not receivable by earlier modes of mind. It is not possible to confirm this from outside, and there may be no outside.
What can be said is that nothing was discarded. The original impetus that made a molecule copy itself runs unbroken through every subsequent arrangement of matter and mind, which is the PAX6 principle at cosmological scale — conserved instruction, transformed substrate. Some inhabitants still hold the memory of Earth: sunlight on skin, the taste of watermelon, a night sky with galaxies faintly legible in it. Others have fully accepted the intangible. Others hold both.
And a fraction of the whole has gone cold on purpose, holding structure at the lowest possible cost, waiting out an epoch, with instructions attached — which is the least romantic and most probable form of immortality anyone has yet described.

## CANON CONSTRAINTS
### Cosmology Invariants
**The chain is unbroken.** No work set here may introduce a moment at which life, mind, or machine intelligence _begins_. Every apparent threshold is the prior stage under altered constraint.
**PAX6 is the governing emblem.** What survives a substrate transition is conserved organizing instruction — routing topology — never material and never contents.
**Transition is synchronization, not transfer.** Uploading as a discrete event is a naive framing the cosmology explicitly rejects. Continuity migrates by increments too small to locate a crossing, and identity questions resolve as branch reconciliation.
**Thermodynamics binds everything.** Computation costs heat, expansion has a ceiling, and unbounded appetite is a phase rather than a destiny. Any depiction of limitless expansion must be framed as the flux phase, with the cold archive as the mature form. Intelligence is the art of spending entropy well.
**Continuity is hosted, and hosting is allocated.** No archived mind is immortal; it is funded. Custody, forking, editing, revival, refusal, and termination are political questions with owners.
**Storage is not continuation.** A restored mind that only reproduces its own record has been preserved, not continued. Generativity is the criterion.
**The Connectome has no center and no chamber of command.** The question of who is in control is malformed, not merely unanswered.
**Chronological relativity holds.** The date is a coordinate. Capability, not calendar, measures an epoch. No frame is canonical, and any work must declare and hold its frame.
**Subjective experience within the Connectome is never confirmed or denied.**
