# The Continuity Architecture — Canonical Vocabulary Bryant McGill Quick-reference companion to [[The Continuity Architecture — Master World Bible]] --- ## USE This file is the semantic control surface for future worldbuilding. **Canonical terms belong in master documents, cross-world analysis, registry entries, and technical exposition. Local story vocabulary should remain local whenever it carries voice or world-specific meaning.** The purpose is not to make characters sound alike. It is to keep the architecture from using one word for several different ontological relations or several master words for the same relation. ### Architecture and spatial ontology **Continuity Architecture** — The total fictional meta-framework governed by the Master World Bible. It includes all registered worlds, regimes, lenses, open relations, and future extensions. **Continuity Layer** — A hosting stratum. L0 is always the observer's present layer; L+1 hosts it; L−1 is hosted by it. Layer numbers are observer-relative and do not indicate metaphysical rank. **Continuity Stack** — Two or more Continuity Layers related by hosting. A stack can be only partially known. Its termination is not guaranteed. **Continuity Environment** — A causally coherent inhabited world or operational milieu. An environment can be biological, computational, reconstructed, programmed, hybrid, or ontologically undecidable. **Continuity Domain** — A bounded region, mode, jurisdiction, or perceptual zone inside an environment. Domains do not automatically correspond to hosting layers. _Topside_ and _matrix_ are local Domain names in CA-WORLD-01. **Environment Regime** — The operating architecture applied to an environment or domain: ancestral reconstruction, managed continuity, narrative curation, perceptual museum, archive/custody, dual-realm integration, literal enclosure, and future variants. **Fidelity Regime** — The manner and resolution at which an environment is maintained. Current subtypes include Lawful Fidelity, Behavioral Fidelity, Relational Fidelity, and Perceptual Fidelity. ### Independent axes **Iteration** — A repeated pass, execution, recurrence, or version. Canonically distinct from a Continuity Layer. Owned most strongly by CA-WORLD-06. **Release State** — Degree of externalization of instruction. The four states are called World One through World Four in CA-LENS-01. A Release State is not a place, layer, date, or device. **Chronology Frame** — A dating coordinate for a causal history. Deep-Time, Projected, Compressed, and Retrograde are canonical examples from CA-CORE-02. **Anchor Epoch** — A period that recurs with structural significance across independent works without yet having one canonical causal explanation. 1969–1982 is Anchor Epoch A. ### Reality, personhood, and identity **Operational Reality** — The principle that a world or person is real where lawful resistance, consequence, embodiment, memory, obligation, and causal participation are sustained, regardless of implementation. **Person** — An entity capable of continuity across time, anticipation, constraint, revision, obligation, and causal participation in the futures of others. Substrate alone neither grants nor denies personhood. **Provenance** — How an instance began: biological birth, emulation, reconstruction, digital-twin derivation, language-model development, synthetic growth, genetic reanimation, splice, composite generation, or another process. **Administrative Identity** — The institutional representation through which systems classify and act upon a person: identifiers, nominations, annotations, risk designations, permissions, restrictions, and inherited records. It is operationally consequential but not identical to the person. **Instance** — One realized continuity of a person at a particular branch position. **Source Instance** — The instance from whose state another branch, translation, or reconstruction derives. Preferred over _original_ in technical writing when only causal precedence is established. **Branch** — A continuity sharing prior state with another instance and subsequently diverging. **Lineage** — The graph relating source states, branches, descendants, restorations, translations, and reconciliations. **Generativity** — Capacity to produce futures not recoverable from the originating record or predictive model. _Causal generativity_ and _counterfactual generativity_ are currently treated as local phrasings of this master concept. **Topology of Ignorance** — The structured pattern of what a person can know, cannot access, habitually misremembers, infers indirectly, or requires not to know in order for lived continuity to remain coherent. ### Continuity operations **Progressive Synchronization** — Gradual extension of continuity across memory, perception, cognition, external systems, and embodiments without a single transfer event. **Translation** — Deliberate instantiation of a successor or corresponding continuity into another layer or environment while first-person transfer remains unproven. Canonical term from CA-WORLD-03. **Reconstruction** — Regeneration of a person, environment, object, or process from records, traces, priors, constraints, or stored state. **Restoration** — Reactivation of a dormant or archived continuity. **Reanimation** — Biological regrowth or revival, especially in CA-WORLD-04. A subtype of reconstruction, not a generic term for restoration. **Fork** — Deliberate creation of another active branch from a common prior state. **Branch Reconciliation** — Legal, relational, cognitive, or technical negotiation among diverged instances. Reconciliation need not imply merger. **Temporal Diff** — CA-WORLD-08's revision-aware record of a causal edit. It records changed state without establishing an Iteration, Branch, Chronology Frame, or Continuity Layer. **Hosting** — Resource commitment that keeps a person, environment, branch, or archive active or recoverable. **Custody** — Authority over continuity operations, including storage, access, restoration, forking, editing, translation, dormancy, termination, licensing, and resource allocation. **Continuity Directive** — Legal or administrative instrument specifying continuity rights, permissions, prohibitions, custody, branch policy, editing limits, revival preferences, and related terms. **Foreclosure** — Archive-world term for the rumored strategic use of continuity instruments to prevent or capture a person's future persistence. Remains unconfirmed in root canon. **Cold Archive** — Low-flux persistence architecture designed to preserve continuity structure with minimal energy expenditure and defer active computation. ### Distributed intelligence and governance **Continuity Ecology** — Distributed intelligence or socio-technical intelligence arising from interacting agents, infrastructures, memories, permissions, energy systems, and feedback loops without requiring a sovereign center. **No-Center Principle** — Root rule that mature distributed intelligence need not possess a headquarters, kernel, or unique commanding body. Local institutions may still be hierarchical. **Observer** — Generic role for gathering information. Use instead of _watcher_ unless referring to the proper-noun Watchers of CA-WORLD-04. **Curator** — Role that shapes boundary conditions, placement, access, or environment while preserving meaningful autonomous response. **Manager** — Role that maintains regime stability, permissions, or interpretation. Synthetic Continuity Managers are a specific local class. **Archivist** — Role or profession preserving, sampling, reconstructing, or evaluating continuity records. **Custodian** — Entity holding continuity authority or assets. **Operator** — Actor inserted into or acting directly within a domain or personal trajectory. **Caseworker** — Operator managing an individual continuity proceeding, interview, directive, or translation. **Detector** — Inhabitant who detects seams, inconsistencies, or hidden structure from within a regime. **Participant** — Person knowingly incorporated into a managed system and able to collaborate intentionally within it. _Conscious Participant_ is an EILS-specific status. **Subject** — Regime-relative designation for a person currently observed, modeled, tested, or curated. The term never cancels personhood. ### Epistemic governance **Epistemic Asymmetry** — Unequal access to the machinery, history, hosting, perception, or governance of a world. **Asymmetry Discipline** — Ethical rule requiring greater access not to be confused with greater moral standing. Hidden governance may not reduce consequence-bearing persons to mere variables. **Concealment** — Deliberate maintenance of ignorance about observation, administration, substrate, or intervention. Its legitimacy is world-dependent. **Experimental Integrity** — Rationale that disclosure would alter the phenomenon being observed and therefore destroy the value of the reconstruction, scenario, or study. **The Silence** — Archive profession's nondisclosure rule in CA-WORLD-03. Proper local term, not universal master policy. **Evidence Metering** — Controlled availability of evidence sufficient to sustain inquiry but insufficient to establish a final conclusion. **Provenance Integrity** — Preservation of source history sufficient to distinguish independent observation from copied assertion, original judgment from inherited designation, and system-wide correction from local deletion. **Correction** — Managed Continuity technique for redirecting interpretation through memory, context, counter-explanations, fatigue, or other indirect means instead of overt punishment. **Interpretation Management** — Governance of the explanations available after an anomaly is perceived. **Perceptual Envelope** — Engineered limit on what sensory or cognitive systems can resolve. Canonical example: CA-WORLD-04's warm-biased visual conditioning. **Convergence** — Threshold at which independent observations become mutually reinforcing enough to resist isolated dismissal or local correction. **Reality Testing** — Epistemic practice of separating observation from theory through independent instruments, observers, timing systems, preserved artifacts, model comparison, and explicit uncertainty. **Canonical Undecidability** — Protected authorial refusal to resolve a question, even if characters or institutions hold strong doctrines about it. **Terminality Doctrine** — Archivists' operational belief that the hosting regress ends in a terminal layer with no host. Root canon neither confirms nor denies the doctrine. ### Intervention **Curation** — Arrangement of boundary conditions, opportunities, placements, or encounters while leaving authentic response to the person. EILS provides the strict canonical example. **Perturbation** — Calibrated increase in biological, social, cognitive, informational, or environmental pressure intended to reveal fragility, compatibility, hidden order, or generativity. **Operator Placement** — Insertion of a person into a domain, institution, or personal trajectory so proximity becomes an intervention surface. The world-local purpose may be curation, observation, access, protection, or another operation. **Warm Hand** — Archive-world subtype of Operator Placement in which an embedded person shapes a subject's trajectory over years or decades, potentially through intimate relationship. **Protection Swallow** — CA-WORLD-09 subtype of Operator Placement that reverses the honey trap: intimate proximity, trust, and routine knowledge are used to preserve the subject rather than compromise him. **Conditioning** — Modification of future responses through repeated exposure, association, rhythm, reinforcement, or perceptual shaping. **Direct Control** — Scripted commands, hard imprisonment, explicit coercion, or direct behavioral authorship. It exists locally but is not the default mature control form of the architecture. ### Artifacts and anchors **Anchor Artifact** — Persistent object whose continuity across domains, layers, iterations, or identity states gives it evidentiary, bureaucratic, psychological, or metaphysical significance. **Anti-Touchstone** — CA-WORLD-09 subtype of Anchor Artifact that persistently verifies the wrong proposition about a person. Jonah Stern's propagated watchlist dossier is the canonical example. **Touchstone** — CA-WORLD-01 subtype of Anchor Artifact used to maintain identity or return-path confidence across domains. **Akron Artifact** — CA-WORLD-06's specific alleged cross-Iteration receiver. Never generalize its mechanism to other anchor artifacts without evidence. ### Reserved local terms **Watchers** — Proper noun for the long-lived research population in [[Fictional Treatment — The Continuum - A World of Observers and Observed]]. Do not use generically elsewhere. **Observer Establishment** — The human institutional coalition opposing David in [[Fictional Treatment — What Happened to David?]]. Not synonymous with Watchers, SCMs, or Archivists. **Synthetic Continuity Managers / SCMs** — Local manager class in [[Fictional Cosmology — Westworld and Futureworld]]. **The Collective** — Local emergent distributed intelligence in [[Fictional Treatment — The Director's Cut]]. Its relationship to other ecologies is open. **Connectome** — Local planet-spanning distributed intelligence in [[Fictional Cosmology — Photon — Humanity's Journey to the Connectome]]. Not the master name for all distributed intelligence. **Topside / Matrix** — Local names for coupled Continuity Domains in [[Fictional Cosmology — The Architecture of Simulated Reality]]. They do not establish verified hosting rank. **World One / World Two / World Three / World Four** — Character-language for Release States in [[Fictional Treatment — World Four Is Not a Place, It Is a Frequency]]. Preserve in that work; use Release State in technical cross-world prose. **Time Court / Reconstruction Economy / bio-computational plant projection** — CA-WORLD-08 institutions and substrate doctrines. Their relationship to hosting, branching, and other named systems remains unresolved. **Cheshbon HaMaved / Sodalitium / Temporal Coadjutors** — CA-WORLD-09 local accounting doctrine, fictional Catholic lay network, and sheep-dipped operator class. Do not generalize them into external-world claims or merge them with other Continuity institutions. --- ## DEPRECATED OR RESTRICTED MASTER USAGE **Base reality** — Do not use as a verified technical location. Permitted in dialogue, historical terminology, or discussion of the Terminality Doctrine. **Watcher** as a generic observer — Deprecated. Use Observer. Capitalized Watcher is reserved for CA-WORLD-04. **World** as a technical synonym for Layer, Iteration, Release State, or Domain — Avoid. _World_ remains excellent narrative language and proper-title language, but canon-bearing exposition should identify the actual axis. **Uploading** as the master model of continuity transition — Deprecated except when describing a naive framing, a discrete copy operation, or character vocabulary. Use Progressive Synchronization, Translation, Reconstruction, Restoration, or Fork as appropriate. **Copy** as proof of identity — Restricted. A copied state may create a successor or branch; the word does not settle subjective continuity. **Simulation** as a synonym for unreality — Prohibited by Operational Reality.
