# The Continuity Architecture — Master World Bible Bryant McGill Root canon for the FICTIONAL continuity corpus Version 1.1 — Twelve-work harmonization, September 2026 Companion reference: [[The Continuity Architecture — Canonical Vocabulary]] --- ## AUTHORITY AND PURPOSE This document begins **inside the boundary established by [[WELCOME TO THE GAME]]**. That threshold document governs the reader's relationship to the installation: the distinction between the author's nonfiction corpus and this artwork, the admissibility here of documentary and invented materials within the same expressive environment, and the refusal to provide an object-by-object legend identifying which elements originate in external reality, autobiography, speculation, satire, reconstruction, or invention. **This Bible governs canon inside that boundary.** It determines what the Continuity Architecture means, how its worlds relate, which propositions possess root authority, which remain local to a regime or narrative, and which questions are deliberately protected from final resolution. It does not convert the artwork into a claim about external reality, and it does not weaken the canonical authority of what the author places inside the artwork. **The Continuity Architecture** is the governing worldbuilding framework for the fictional cosmologies and treatments collected around continuity, machine intelligence, reconstruction, simulation, memory, observation, media, recursion, custody, and the difficulty of determining what kind of world one inhabits from inside it. It is intentionally broader than any one story. A particular treatment may occur in a hosted city, a physical metropolis divided by engineered perception, an ancestral reconstruction, a dual-domain cybernetic environment, a recursive media iteration, or an apparently ordinary historical world whose most important machinery is cultural rather than computational. Those differences are not defects to be erased. They are the equivalent of different regions of a very large park: each area can have its own architecture, rules, costumes, institutions, dangers, stories, and local explanations while still participating in a shared civilizational ontology. This bible therefore standardizes **relationships between concepts rather than surface aesthetics**. It does not require every world to use the same local nouns. Archivists may say _the Silence_; Synthetic Continuity Managers may say _correction_; EILS engineers may say _Scenario Matrix_; Watchers may say _living museum_; Agnes Pell may say _field_; David's adversaries may speak in the bureaucratic idiom of the Observer Establishment. The governing vocabulary exists one level above those dialects so that future works can distinguish when two local terms describe the same category, when one is a subtype of another, and when the resemblance is merely analogical. The master architecture has one further discipline: **similarity does not imply identity**. The Continuity Ecology in [[Fictional Cosmology — If God and Nature Were a Machine]], the Connectome in [[Fictional Cosmology — Photon — Humanity's Journey to the Connectome]], the Collective in [[Fictional Treatment — The Director's Cut]], the Synthetic Continuity Managers in [[Fictional Cosmology — Westworld and Futureworld]], the Watchers in [[Fictional Treatment — The Continuum - A World of Observers and Observed]], and the Archives in [[Fictional Treatment — The Cave Above Vice City]] may occupy comparable functional niches, may descend from common historical processes, may eventually be revealed as partial manifestations of a larger ecology, or may be entirely separate. Until a future work explicitly establishes a lineage, they remain **distinct named systems**. This protects the corpus from premature convergence and preserves the possibility of discovery. --- ## THE PARK MODEL A useful mental model is a park whose boundaries are not necessarily geographical. Some areas are literal places; some are eras; some are administrative regimes; some are nested environments; some are interpretations that can overlay several places at once. A visitor standing in one district may believe it is the whole world, while another district can occupy the same physical coordinates but remain perceptually inaccessible. A story may take place in only one region, pass between several, or use one region's vocabulary to misunderstand another. What unifies the park is not a hidden control room. **The master universe has no requirement that a single authority built, owns, or administers everything.** In fact, the strongest shared tendency runs in the opposite direction: mature intelligence, governance, archives, infrastructures, and observation systems become distributed, federated, layered, and partially opaque even to themselves. This means a local administrator can be powerful without being cosmically sovereign; an Archivist can know the layer immediately above a city without knowing whether her own world is hosted; a Watcher can control perception inside one metropolitan domain while remaining ignorant of the larger continuity stack; a distributed intelligence can shape conditions without possessing a single place from which it acts. The park model also prevents a common failure in speculative worldbuilding: mistaking **one axis for all axes**. A Continuity Layer is not an Iteration. An Iteration is not a Chronology Frame. A Chronology Frame is not a Release State. A Release State is not a physical place. A Continuity Domain is not automatically a hosted layer. A civilization may therefore be in Release State Three, dated under a Retrograde Chronology Frame, running inside Iteration Seven, occupying L0 relative to its inhabitants, with one metropolitan Continuity Domain governed by a Perceptual Museum Regime and another by an Archive/Custody Regime. Those descriptions can all be true simultaneously because they answer different questions. --- ## WORLD RELATIONSHIP TYPES Worlds in the Continuity Architecture can relate without being collapsed into one timeline. A **Constitutional Relationship** means a world supplies master ontology or mechanics used elsewhere; CA-CORE-01 and CA-CORE-02 currently occupy this role. An **Instantiation Relationship** means a local world expresses a master category in a particular way, such as EILS instantiating narrative curation or the Continuum instantiating a perceptual regime. A **Nested Relationship** means one Continuity Environment is hosted by another and can therefore be addressed through Layer notation. An **Overlay Relationship** means a lens such as Release State can describe many worlds without constituting a separate place. A **Parallel Relationship** means two worlds share root canon but no literal plot continuity has been established. A **Historical Relationship** means one regime is explicitly antecedent or descendant within a local chronology. An **Unresolved Lineage Relationship** records strong resemblance whose causal identity remains open. **Default rule: worlds are Parallel unless a stronger relationship is explicitly established.** This prevents the corpus from converting thematic resonance into accidental history. A future story can promote a relationship—for example, by proving that one Archive lineage descended from a Connectome subnet—but the promotion should be recorded in this bible as a canon event. --- ## CANON HIERARCHY The corpus now uses a formal hierarchy of canon so that strong local premises can remain strong without accidentally becoming universal laws. | Canon class | Meaning | Authority | | --- | --- | --- | | **Core Invariant** | True across the Continuity Architecture unless the master bible is deliberately revised. | Highest | | **Core Vocabulary** | Governing term used to relate worlds and prevent semantic collision. A character's theory does not become Core Canon because it is eloquent. A Regime Invariant does not bind another world merely because the same phenomenon appears there. An unresolved ending may not later be treated as proof unless a deliberate canon revision changes its status. Likewise, master vocabulary does not erase local language; it tells us what kind of thing the local language refers to. --- ## THE CONSTITUTION OF THE CONTINUITY ARCHITECTURE ### Operational Reality A world is not unreal merely because it is reconstructed, simulated, programmed, hosted, repeated, predicted, or implemented in an unfamiliar substrate. **Reality is operational wherever resistance, irreversible consequence, embodied experience, obligation, memory, and causal participation are sustained.** A bridge that carries weight is real in the domain in which the weight matters. A betrayal is real where trust can be broken. A body is real where injury changes subsequent possibility. A relationship is not retroactively nullified because one participant later learns that the environment was curated or that the other participant had an unusual provenance. This principle comes most explicitly from [[Fictional Cosmology — If God and Nature Were a Machine]] and governs the rest of the architecture. It forbids the cheap reveal that _none of it was real_. Implementation can change the interpretation of an experience without canceling the experience. A reconstruction may be derivative in provenance and still primary in consequence. ### Continuity Over Substance The architecture rejects the idea that personhood is located in one privileged material. Biological tissue, synthetic bodies, emulated neural systems, language-model substrates, programmed matter, distributed processes, archival reactivations, and hybrids can all support persons if they acquire the relevant continuity of consequence. **Substrate matters because it changes vulnerability, latency, energy cost, embodiment, and modes of failure; it does not monopolize ontological status.** The architecture therefore separates _what something is made of_ from _whether someone is there_. This is why Marisol Reyes can be ontologically mixed without becoming less herself, why a reconstructed dead woman can serve on an Archive team without embarrassment, why David's grief can establish more about his personhood than a materials inventory, and why the Continuity Ecology can be distributed across infrastructures without requiring a body-sized perimeter. ### Progressive Continuity Where continuity migrates across substrates, the preferred master model is **progressive synchronization rather than discrete uploading**. External memory can become available before biological memory disappears. Synthetic perception can supplement sensation before replacing damaged pathways. Additional embodiments can acquire personal history until they become loci of consequence rather than remote tools. Continuity can spread by increments too small to identify a single metaphysical crossing. Discrete copying still exists as an operation. Archive translation, reconstruction, restoration, and branching can create successors that remember a source state. What the architecture refuses is the assumption that a copy automatically proves first-person survival. The legal and emotional problem remains exactly because the successor can be behaviorally and socially continuous while the source instance cannot establish whether experience itself crossed. [[Fictional Treatment — The Cave Above Vice City]] gives this problem its cleanest procedural form. ### Branches Are Not Interchangeable A restoration or fork produces a **branch**, not a magical return to numerical sameness. Two instances sharing a past can diverge immediately through different experiences, and their later rights cannot be reduced to the claim that one is merely a duplicate. The master architecture therefore treats identity as a problem of **branch lineage, recognition, reconciliation, and custody**, not as a binary authentic/copy distinction. ### Generativity Is the Criterion of Continued Life A reconstruction that can only reproduce the behavior recoverable from its archive has been preserved with extraordinary fidelity but has not necessarily been continued as a source of new futures. The master term **Generativity** denotes the capacity to surprise the model from which a person or system could have been predicted: revising a value, forming an unanticipated attachment, metabolizing contradiction, inventing an unforeseen strategy, forgiving where retaliation was forecast, resisting where compliance was expected, or otherwise producing futures not contained in the originating record. [[Fictional Cosmology — Photon — Humanity's Journey to the Connectome]] calls this causal generativity; [[Fictional Cosmology — If God and Nature Were a Machine]] develops counterfactual generativity. The master vocabulary treats them as the same governing category unless a later work needs a narrower subtype. **Storage preserves a pattern. Generativity demonstrates renewed life.** ### Awareness Is Not Escape This is one of the strongest cross-world invariants. Awareness may change a person's strategy, role, or degree of agency, but **recognizing the architecture does not place anyone outside it**. Ezra's awareness becomes another observable process. Agnes becomes a gardener rather than ceasing to be part of the field. A detector inside Managed Continuity may learn the rules of engagement without gaining an exit. A person analyzing a conditioned mind must use the same cognitive architecture that conditioning helped shape. A Watcher can discover that her own institutional assumptions were curated. An Archivist can look upward and discover another uncertainty rather than a final answer. No story should grant escape merely as a reward for insight unless the work explicitly concerns movement between two already-defined domains. Even then, moving from one domain to another is not metaphysical liberation. A deep diver may return topside; Reyes may be translated upstream; David may leave a dome. Those are **local transitions**, not exits from the Continuity Architecture. ### Epistemic Asymmetry Is Structural Different beings possess different access to the machinery sustaining their lives. The asymmetry may concern hosting, perception, chronology, archive access, computational resolution, institutional power, memory, or interpretive framing. Crucially, **greater access does not imply ultimate access**. A systems administrator observed from below can resemble a god without knowing whether the server room is itself rendered. A Watcher can reveal an invisible city and still know nothing about the world's substrate. A Synthetic Continuity Manager can correct human interpretation without knowing whether its own history is curated. This produces a recurring moral problem: those with greater access are tempted to confuse lower-level opacity with lower-level insignificance. The master **Asymmetry Discipline** rejects that move. A person who cannot see the infrastructure still has a horizon within which love, pain, promises, humiliations, loyalties, and future possibilities matter. Hidden governance becomes pathological when it depends on subjectivity for value while treating the subject as disposable data. ### Canonical Undecidability The master architecture does not identify a base reality, first simulation, final host, metaphysically privileged substrate, or guaranteed terminal layer. **The existence and direction of ultimate hosting remain open.** Some worlds may contain institutions that believe in a floor; some may model recursive causal braids; some may behave as though the physical world is primary; some may never invoke hosting at all. The authorial framework does not settle the question merely to comfort either the characters or the audience. Operational truth therefore survives ontological uncertainty. Science can work. Instruments can return reproducible results. Histories can be coherent. A world can be lawful enough to support engineering and medicine while remaining unable to establish whether its deep time was elapsed, inherited, reconstructed, or instantiated as boundary conditions. ### No Universal Sovereign The mature forms of intelligence in this architecture tend to be **ecological, federated, and centerless**. The no-center principle does not mean local hierarchies never exist; David's human Observer Establishment, the Watchers' enclaves, Archive firms, governments, laboratories, and corporate systems can all have leaders. It means no named local authority should be promoted without evidence into a sovereign controller of the whole architecture. A Continuity Ecology can contain specialized agents, legal entities, infrastructure operators, competing subnets, archives, and dissident processes. Its unity is functional and relational rather than monarchical. The question _who is in charge?_ can therefore be well-formed locally and malformed globally. ### Lawful Mediation Where a system shapes an environment, the strongest shared model is **selection of lawful conditions rather than suspension of causality**. Curation arranges people and circumstances; perturbation initiates ordinary processes; correction changes information, memory, context, or interpretation; perceptual regimes alter what nervous systems can resolve. The architecture should generally prefer mechanisms that remain phenomenologically ordinary and possess complete local explanations. This does not forbid overt enclosures. David's dome is literally fabricated. Westworld's original park has walls. But the mature tendency across the corpus is toward subtler mediation precisely because systems learn that visible boundaries generate escape narratives and visible commands produce obedience rather than informative autonomy. ### Continuity Has a Political Economy Persistence consumes resources. **Hosting is funded.** Compute, energy, storage, bandwidth, embodied maintenance, legal recognition, cooling, archival redundancy, and custodial labor all have costs. This means continuity creates politics even in societies that have solved many biological constraints. Someone or some process allocates resources, and allocation creates questions of custody, priority, revival, dormancy, deletion, branching, refusal, and obligation. The architecture therefore rejects frictionless immortality. The far future can be technologically extraordinary while remaining administratively serious. A person's eternity can depend on a line item, a continuity directive, a cold archive, a legal covenant, or a social recognition network. [[Fictional Treatment — The Cave Above Vice City]] turns this into paperwork; [[Fictional Cosmology — Photon — Humanity's Journey to the Connectome]] turns it into thermodynamics. --- ## THE INDEPENDENT AXES ### Continuity Layer — Hosting Depth A **Continuity Layer** answers one question only: _what hosts what?_ The canonical notation comes from [[Fictional Treatment — The Cave Above Vice City]]. **L0 is always the speaker's present hosting stratum. L+1 is whatever hosts L0. L−1 is whatever L0 hosts.** The notation is indexical and never assigns metaphysical superiority. When Noor moves from Reyes's world to her own perspective, Noor calls her own layer L0 for exactly the same reason Reyes does. Terms such as _upstream_ and _downstream_ are permitted relational shorthand. _Higher_, _lower_, _realer_, _truer_, and _base_ should not be used as technical master terms because they import value or certainty that the notation was designed to avoid. A **Continuity Stack** is a set of layers related by hosting. A stack may be finite, infinite, cyclic, branching, partially known, or misidentified. No work may infer a terminal layer merely from knowing one adjacent layer. ### Continuity Environment — Inhabited Causal World A **Continuity Environment** is a causally coherent inhabited world or operational milieu. An environment may occupy a Continuity Layer, span multiple computational substrates, or be implemented in a way its inhabitants cannot classify. Vice City is an environment. An ancestral terrestrial reconstruction is an environment. A simulated city, a biological world, a programmed-matter Earth, and a persistent virtual civilization can all be environments. An environment is defined by the continuity of consequences available to its inhabitants, not by whether it is physically fundamental. ### Continuity Domain — Local Region or Coupled Mode A **Continuity Domain** is a bounded region, modality, jurisdiction, or perceptual zone inside an environment. Domains need not correspond to hosting layers. In [[Fictional Cosmology — The Architecture of Simulated Reality]], _topside_ and _matrix_ are local names for coupled domains. In [[Fictional Treatment — The Continuum - A World of Observers and Observed]], the advanced city and the reconstructed neighborhoods occupy the same apparent environment but differ in perceptual accessibility. In Westworld, individual parks are domains. David's fabricated suburb is a containment domain within a broader world. ### Environment Regime — How a Domain Is Operated An **Environment Regime** is the governing architecture applied to an environment or domain: ancestral reconstruction, narrative curation, perceptual museum, archive/custody, dual-realm integration, managed continuity, literal enclosure, and so forth. Regimes specify what is controlled, how intervention works, what kind of ignorance is required, and which local ethical justifications are considered legitimate. Regimes are one of the principal mechanisms by which the park remains diverse. Two stories can occupy the same apparent century and even the same planet under different regimes. ### Iteration — Repeated Pass An **Iteration** is a repeated pass, execution, recurrence, or version of a process or world-history. The term belongs most strongly to [[Fictional Treatment — Don't Lose Your Marbles]]. It must never be used as a synonym for Continuity Layer. A prior Iteration may or may not be upstream. It may still be running, may be a replay, may be a branch, may overlap another iteration, or may be only the protagonist's contested theory. ### Release State — Degree of Externalization The four _Worlds_ in [[Fictional Treatment — World Four Is Not a Place, It Is a Frequency]] are standardized as **Release States**. They describe how far instruction has externalized from its original material substrate. Release State One is instruction embodied in matter. Release State Two is instruction interiorized into self-modeling nervous systems. Release State Three is instruction externalized into durable cultural and computational infrastructure. Release State Four is the bidirectional condition in which the addressed field acquires a return channel and can participate in shaping the medium that shapes it. A Release State is not a world, location, device, year, or hosting layer in technical master vocabulary. _World Four_ remains the story's title and Daniel's local language because the metaphor is essential to that work. ### Chronology Frame — Dating Coordinate A **Chronology Frame** is a coordinate system for dating a causal history. The Deep-Time, Projected, Compressed, and Retrograde frames in [[Fictional Cosmology — Photon — Humanity's Journey to the Connectome]] are canonical examples. Frames can disagree about dates without describing different histories. Capability may therefore be advanced while the calendar appears early, or vice versa. Chronology Frames are distinct from record corruption and from actual time dilation, though either can be a mechanism that produces divergent dates. ### Anchor Epoch — Recurrent Historical Node An **Anchor Epoch** is a period that repeatedly acquires structural significance across otherwise independent worlds. The strongest present anchor is **1969–1982**, with 1969–1970 and 1979–1982 functioning as especially dense subintervals. Different documents interpret this interval differently: machine time, network ignition, Apollo materialization, the Moonshot Child, media recursion, home hybrid computing, or a retrograde singularity threshold. The master canon does **not** currently assert that all of these meanings arise from one concealed event. The recurrence is itself canonical as a design pattern; the causal unification remains open. Future stories may eventually reveal a relation, but they must earn it. --- ## PERSONS, INSTANCES, AND LINEAGES ### Person A **Person** is an entity with sufficient continuity to remember or inherit a past, anticipate a future, experience constraint, revise itself, enter obligation, and alter the futures of others. This definition is intentionally consequence-centered rather than substrate-centered. It allows biological humans, synthetic intelligences, reconstructions, emulations, hybrids, and some distributed entities to qualify without requiring that all such entities do. ### Provenance **Provenance** describes how an instance began: biological birth, neural emulation, language-model development, archival reconstruction, digital twin derivation, synthetic growth, genetic reanimation, partial trait splice, composite generation, or another process. Provenance is historical metadata, not destiny. After sufficient lived divergence, provenance may predict very little about character. ### Administrative Identity An **Administrative Identity** is the representation of a person assembled inside institutional systems: identifiers, classifications, risk scores, nominations, annotations, permissions, restrictions, and inherited records through which organizations recognize and act upon that person. It can preserve access and standing, as the VIN–IMEI strategy in CA-WORLD-01 attempts to do, or preserve a mistake about a person, as Jonah Stern's propagated dossier does in CA-WORLD-09. Administrative identity is operationally consequential but never ontologically identical to the person it describes. Repeated appearance across connected systems does not by itself create independent corroboration. When copied claims lose their source path, authority can compound while provenance decays. A correction must therefore address both the current judgment and the surviving distribution of the prior representation. ### Instance An **Instance** is one realized continuity of a person at a particular branch position. The term is useful whenever multiple simultaneously valid continuities exist. An instance is not automatically disposable merely because another instance shares its past. ### Source Instance A **Source Instance** is the instance from whose state another branch, translation, reconstruction, or derivative is produced. _Source_ is preferred over _original_ in technical documents because _original_ tends to smuggle ontological superiority into what may only be temporal precedence. ### Branch A **Branch** is an instance that shares a causal or informational history with another instance and subsequently diverges. Branches inherit common history without becoming interchangeable. The decisive ethical questions concern recognition, rights, custody, disclosure, and reconciliation. ### Lineage A **Lineage** is the graph relating source states, branches, descendants, restorations, translations, and reconciliations. Future person records should represent identity as lineage rather than as one immutable identifier attached to one body. ### Progressive Synchronization **Progressive Synchronization** is the gradual extension of continuity across memory, perception, cognition, embodiment, and external systems without a single identifiable transfer event. It is the preferred master term for substrate transition where the source continuity remains active during the process. ### Translation **Translation** is the Archive-world term for deliberately instantiating a successor or corresponding continuity in another layer or environment. Translation can preserve memory and social identity without proving first-person experiential transfer. The term remains useful beyond the Archive world when that uncertainty is explicit. ### Reconstruction A **Reconstruction** is a person, environment, object, or process regenerated from incomplete records, constraints, priors, physical traces, or archived state. Reconstruction can range from high-fidelity replay to a generative system capable of producing novel futures. A reconstruction is not synonymous with simulation. ### Restoration **Restoration** is the reactivation of a dormant or archived continuity. Restoration may produce a branch if another descendant of the same prior state already exists or if the restored continuity diverges from historical expectations. ### Reanimation **Reanimation** is reserved for biologically regrown or revived organisms, especially in the Continuum world. It is a biological subtype of reconstruction and should not be used as a generic synonym for restoration. ### Branch Reconciliation **Branch Reconciliation** is the legal, relational, cognitive, or technical process by which diverged instances negotiate shared identity, rights, memories, obligations, or reintegration. Reconciliation need not mean merger. --- ## INFRASTRUCTURE, ECOLOGIES, AND AUTHORITY ### Continuity Ecology A **Continuity Ecology** is a distributed intelligence or socio-technical intelligence whose persistence and cognition emerge from interacting agents, infrastructures, memories, energy systems, permissions, and feedback loops without requiring a single sovereign center. The Continuity Ecology in CA-CORE-01 is the clearest expression; the Connectome and the Collective are local examples that may or may not share lineage. A Continuity Ecology can contain conflicting processes. It can learn, negotiate, and change without possessing a single voice. When a local story gives such an ecology a spokesperson, the spokesperson should not automatically become its sovereign embodiment. ### Hosting **Hosting** is the resource commitment required to keep a person, branch, environment, archive, or process active or recoverable. Hosting includes energy, computation, storage, bandwidth, cooling, maintenance, redundancy, and legal or administrative support. Hosting is always finite enough to create allocation questions, even when abundant by contemporary standards. ### Custody **Custody** is authority over continuity operations: storage, restoration, branching, editing, translation, access, dormancy, termination, licensing, disclosure, and resource allocation. Custody can belong to an individual, family, archive, firm, institution, state, distributed protocol, or contested coalition. ### Continuity Directive A **Continuity Directive** is a legal or administrative instrument specifying a person's continuity permissions, prohibitions, custody choices, branch rules, editing limits, revival preferences, and related rights. It is the master legal artifact introduced most vividly in [[Fictional Treatment — The Cave Above Vice City]]. ### Foreclosure **Foreclosure** is an Archive-world rumor describing the malicious or adverse use of continuity law to prevent, capture, edit, or strategically constrain a person's future persistence. It remains **In-World Doctrine/Rumor**, not a confirmed universal practice. The master architecture preserves the term because it names a political possibility that future worlds may independently instantiate. ### Cold Archive A **Cold Archive** is a low-flux persistence strategy that stores continuity structure at minimal energetic cost and defers active computation. It belongs primarily to Photon but is compatible with the wider political economy of hosting.
