What we experience as independent willing may sometimes arise when prediction, habit, social conditioning, reward history, environmental pressure, and internal models fail to determine behavior with their usual coherence. In predictive-processing and active-inference models, nervous systems continuously use prior expectations to anticipate the world and organize action, yet an organism that followed its established models with perfect fidelity would become dangerously brittle whenever those models ceased to describe reality. {{Perfect compliance with an internal model would not produce perfect intelligence; it would produce an organism incapable of escaping its own mistakes.}} Variation, noise, competing attractors, exploratory impulses, inhibition failures, and occasional breakdowns in ordinary behavioral control can create departures that appear inefficient or erroneous at one scale while opening extraordinary adaptive possibilities at another. {{What we call individuality, creativity, rebellion, invention, courage, eccentricity, and perhaps even independent will may partly consist of failure modes that biological intelligence learned to turn into capabilities.}} The remarkable achievement of human agency may therefore be not that we escaped the machinery of causation, but that the machinery became complex enough to make productive use of its own departures from regularity.
