# 2023-04-30 - Bryant by the Ship Canal Bridge in Seattle

*Bryant at Ivar's Salmon House, at 401 NE Northlake Way in the Wallingford neighborhood of Seattle, Washington, on a Sunday evening at the end of April 2023, seated at the window table he knew as Bill Gates's favorite seat in one of Gates's favorite restaurants. Glasses pushed up on his head and a pin on the lapel of his navy blazer, he leans toward the camera with a half smile, beneath the timber beams of the dining room; outside, the steel trusses of the Ship Canal Bridge cross the gray sky above the water. Bryant had the best seat in the house, a spectacular view, and food he remembers as amazing. Carved and painted masks in the Northwest Coast style hang on the wooden walls above the booths. On a return visit on Thursday, September 28, 2023, dinner arrived a little before six: one plate of grilled salmon, cross-hatched from the grill, laid beside a flaky white fillet under a ribbon of red and a spoonful of cream sauce, over roasted potatoes, red onion, sweet peppers and pale green romanesco, with a green bottle of S.Pellegrino and a glass of ice water and lemon; another of seared steak crowned with a melting pat of herb butter, over roasted red potatoes, red onion, sweet peppers and broccoli with a wedge of lemon, beside a bundle of charred broccolini. That evening went on to the Allen Institute and, a little before nine, to a mini-golf bar near the Museum of History and Industry on Lake Union.*
