> Dacher Keltner and other psychologists recently showed that higher socioeconomic class—essentially higher satisfaction of esteem needs—leads to increased unethical behavior, while other research suggests that external efforts to boost self-esteem tend to produce anti-social narcissism. Research of this type fits in well with Jonathan Haidt's theories on the authoritarian dimension of moral cognition. It may not be a coincidence that one of the world's most popular religions is literally named "submission". In general, authoritarian impulses have always advised rulers to keep their subjects' bellies full… and pressed firmly against the ground. > Unfortunately, with exception to a few enlightened individuals, professional inclusion has not been the collective experience of underrepresented groups (this goes beyond ethnicity and includes individuals who also "think" differently) in certain scientific disciplines. Many still hope that our civilisation can segue towards a low-carbon future without trauma and disaster. Any human traders today bold enough to compete against the algorithms of high-frequency and low-latency traders should be made aware how far the odds are stacked against them. As Andrei Kirilenko, the chief economist at the US Commodity Futures Trading Commission, along with researchers from Princeton and the University of Washington, found recently, the most aggressive high-frequency traders tend to make the greatest profits—suggesting that it would be wise for the small investor simply to leave the machines to it. It's no coincidence that power in a swathe of other sectors is accruing to those who control the algorithms—whether the Obama campaign's electoral "microtargeters" or the yield-raising strategists of data-fuelled precision agriculture.

### EDGE2013-023 — That We Won't Make Use Of The Error Catastrophe Threshold — William McEwan
> For now we can delight in the recent knowledge that nature has already got there. The APOBEC3 family of genes systematically introduces errors into virus genomes, tipping them over the precipice. Viruses take this threat seriously. HIV has a gene whose function is to counteract APOBEC3. Without this gene, HIV cannot replicate. Other viruses seem to have lost the battle: The human genome is littered with the remnants of extinct viruses that bear the scars of APOBEC3 activity. Perhaps accelerated mutation was a contributing factor to these viruses' demise. I fear evolution's ingenuity—accumulated at that geologically slow rate of 10-10 base pairs per generation—may surpass our own unless we can grasp this beautiful idea and devise some gentle, non-toxic tipping of our own.

### EDGE2013-024 — A Fearful Asymmetry: The Worrying World Of A Would-Be 'Science' — Helena Cronin
> One is the world of the objective content of ideas, in particular of science as a body of knowledge, of actual and possible scientific theories, their truth or falsity, their refutability, tests passed or failed, valid and invalid arguments, objections met or unanswered, crucial evidence deployed, progress achieved. Darwinian science has high status in this world of objective knowledge as perhaps "the single best idea anyone has ever had". > I worry about the recent epidemic of lying and cheating that has infected public discourse in a diversity of domains. Think of science writer Jonah Lehrer's fabrication of fairly trivial details in his non-fiction book, Imagine: How Creativity Works—which was subsequently pulled from shelves by its publisher. Or social psychologist Dietrich Stapel's fabrication of empirical data reported in over 50 published articles—most of which were eventually retracted by the journals.
