# A Continuous Stream of Consciousness by David J. Chalmers > "If consciousness is continuous throughout [gradual uploading], there will be a single stream of consciousness throughout." > **— David J. Chalmers**, *2014, Uploading: A Philosophical Analysis* ## Sources and Context - **Exact original source passage:** "if consciousness is continuous throughout the process, there will be a single stream of consciousness throughout," - **Editorial repair and evidence:** This is Chalmers's conditional premise (iii), not a claim of guaranteed survival. Brackets replace the process with gradual uploading from the immediately preceding paragraph; initial capitalization and terminal punctuation are editorial. The old candidate wording was not found verbatim in the linked paper. [Direct source](https://consc.net/papers/uploading.pdf). No timecode is asserted. - **Full quotation and context:** [Mind Uploading: A Philosophical Analysis](https://consc.net/papers/uploading.pdf) — Chalmers's paper supplies the full gradual-uploading argument and the quoted continuity claim. ## Related Articles and Collections - **Collection:** [[collections/Consciousness Continuity|Consciousness Continuity]] - **Collection:** [[collections/Machine Succession|Machine Succession]] - **Article:** [[articles/Mind Uploading and AI — The Host is Reusable and the Person is the Delta|Mind Uploading and AI — The Host is Reusable and the Person is the Delta]] - **Article:** [[articles/Uploading Is Imminent|Uploading Is Imminent]] - **Article:** [[articles/Escape Hatch in the Skull|Escape Hatch in the Skull]] - **Wiki map:** [[wiki/Identity|Identity]] ## Related Topics - [[wiki/David Chalmers|David Chalmers]] - [[wiki/Consciousness|Consciousness]] - [[wiki/Consciousness Indicators|Consciousness Indicators]] - [[wiki/Personal Identity|Personal Identity]] - [[wiki/Psychological Continuity|Psychological Continuity]] - [[wiki/Durable Identity|Durable Identity]] ## Share on Social Media ``` "If consciousness is continuous throughout [gradual uploading], there will be a single stream of consciousness throughout." — David J.
