# Athenian Assembly The Athenian Assembly was the gathering of eligible citizens who deliberated and voted on public matters in Classical Athens. The Pnyx is its best-known meeting place. The assembly is an institution; the Pnyx is a physical site; Athenian democracy is the broader political arrangement. Those distinctions matter when reading modern speeches staged at the Pnyx. The setting invokes the historical practice of public deliberation without making a modern address an act of the ancient assembly. ## Source - [The Pnyx](https://www.thisisathens.org/antiquities/pnyx), This is Athens official city guide.
