# Classical Athens Classical Athens was a Greek city-state whose fifth- and fourth-century BCE political, philosophical, artistic, and architectural work became exceptionally influential. Its assembly met at the Pnyx; the Acropolis held temples and monuments, including the Parthenon. These were related but distinct civic and sacred spaces. Athens also led a maritime empire through the Delian League. That history belongs alongside its experiments in democracy, without pretending the democratic franchise was universal. ## Source - [The Art of Classical Greece](https://www.metmuseum.org/es/essays/the-art-of-classical-greece-ca-480-323-b-c), Metropolitan Museum of Art.
