# National Institute of Standards and Technology The National Institute of Standards and Technology is a United States Department of Commerce agency responsible for measurement science, technical standards, and widely used cybersecurity and risk-management guidance. ## Archival role NIST provides a neutral reference layer for terminology, control frameworks, cryptography, identity, zero trust, incident response, and system assurance. Its publications help separate vendor language from standard definitions. ## Boundary NIST guidance is not itself proof that a control was implemented or effective. Configuration, scope, evidence, exceptions, and operational testing remain necessary. ## Relationships [[Standards Governance]] · [[Zero Trust Architecture]] · [[Cybersecurity Framework]] · [[Governance Framework]].
