# Fraternities and Sororities American fraternities and sororities are enduring membership institutions organized around chapters, initiation, shared symbols, leadership, service, friendship, and alumni life. Many use Greek letters and terms drawn from classical learning. Their American institutional history begins with Phi Beta Kappa in 1776 and branches into social, service, professional, multicultural, historically Black, and academic organizations. Greek names are an American use of antiquity, not evidence that these organizations descend institutionally from ancient Athenian associations. Their strength extends well beyond campus years. Chapters, foundations, conventions, alumni networks, philanthropy, professional introductions, and coordinated councils allow members to maintain relationships and mobilize resources across decades and locations. Bryant McGill regards this tradition affirmatively as part of American civic and social formation; its reach deserves to be studied as real institutional capacity rather than dismissed as student ceremony. The umbrella organizations show distinct but overlapping structures: the National Panhellenic Conference coordinates 26 women's sororities; the North American Interfraternity Conference represents national men's fraternities; and the National Pan-Hellenic Council connects nine historically Black fraternities and sororities. Each has its own history, membership, and modes of service. ## Related Hellenic Cultural Inheritance · Neo-Westernism · Classical Antiquity in Technology Culture · Collective Intelligence ## Sources - [Phi Beta Kappa history](https://www.pbk.org/about/history). - [National Panhellenic Conference member organizations](https://npcwomen.org/about/our-members/). - [North American Interfraternity Conference member fraternities](https://nicfraternity.org/member-fraternities/). - [National Pan-Hellenic Council history](https://www.nphchq.com/our-history/).
