# Greek War of Independence
The Greek War of Independence began in 1821 against Ottoman rule and led to the establishment of a modern Greek state. The movement attracted philhellenic support abroad and belongs to the history of the modern Greek nation, not to classical Athens.
Rubio's 2026 Pnyx address uses Daniel Webster's response to the Greek struggle as evidence of an early American recognition of Greek inheritance. That rhetorical bridge should not erase the centuries separating antiquity from modern nationhood.
