# Macedonian Empire The Macedonian Empire was the vast but short-lived empire created by Alexander the Great's conquests in the fourth century BCE. It followed the classical period of Athens and enabled new routes for Greek language and cultural exchange across parts of Africa and Asia. After Alexander's death in 323 BCE, successor kingdoms formed the Hellenistic world. The empire was neither the Athenian maritime empire nor the modern Greek state. Keeping those entities distinct makes historical influence traceable. ## Source - [The Hellenistic Age](https://www.metmuseum.org/fr/essays/art-of-the-hellenistic-age-and-the-hellenistic-tradition), Metropolitan Museum of Art.
