# Multiverse
## Definition
**Multiverse** is the hypothesis that the observable universe is one region among many physically real domains, potentially governed by different local conditions. Its scientific standing depends on whether theories tested in observable domains entail multiple cosmic regions, not on whether those regions can be observed directly.

> “Some physicists don’t like the multiverse: they’d be disappointed if some of the key numbers they are trying to explain turn out to be mere environmental contingencies governing our local space-time patch—no more truly ‘fundamental’ than the parameters of the Earth’s orbit round the Sun. But that disappointment would surely be outweighed by the revelation that physical reality was grander and richer than hitherto envisioned. In any case our preferences are irrelevant to the way physical reality actually is—so we should surely be open-minded.”

> “Physical reality could be hugely more extensive than the patch of space and time traditionally called ‘the universe.’ A further Copernican demotion may loom ahead. We’ve learnt that we live in just one planetary system among billions, in one galaxy among billions. But now that’s not all.”

> “[The possibility of a multiverse] is speculative science, but I would say that it is science and not metaphysics. I’m hopeful that as our understanding of the physics of the very early Big Bang firms up, we will gradually develop clearer ideas about whether our Big Bang was the only one and about the overall extent of physical reality.”
