# National Pan-Hellenic Council The National Pan-Hellenic Council was organized at Howard University in 1930 and today coordinates nine historically Black Greek-letter fraternities and sororities, collectively known as the Divine Nine. The member organizations retain distinct histories while working together through collegiate and alumni councils on leadership, scholarship, cultural preservation, service, and civic engagement. NPHC demonstrates a particularly consequential American adaptation of Greek-letter organization: chapter bonds become durable institutions able to act at national and local scales. Its history and purpose should be understood on their own terms within American fraternity and sorority life, not treated as a subdivision of either NPC or NIC. ## Sources - [Our History](https://www.nphchq.com/our-history/), National Pan-Hellenic Council. - [About Us](https://www.nphchq.com/about-us/), National Pan-Hellenic Council.
