# Parthenon The Parthenon is the temple of Athena on the Acropolis of Athens, built in the fifth century BCE during Pericles' era. Its material survival and continuing interpretation make it central to Hellenic cultural inheritance. It is one monument within the Acropolis ensemble, not another name for the whole precinct. Secretary Rubio used its reconstruction after Persian destruction as a civilizational image. McGill's custody framework distinguishes care for the monument from the institutions and technologies that transmit its meaning. ## Sources - [Acropolis, Athens](https://whc.unesco.org/en/list/404), UNESCO. - Rubio speech dossier.
