# Philhellenism
Philhellenism is an admiration for Greek culture and, in a particular nineteenth-century political form, foreign support for the [[wiki/Greek War of Independence|Greek struggle for independence]]. American expressions of sympathy for that struggle included Daniel Webster's address to Congress, later quoted by Marco Rubio at the [[wiki/Pnyx|Pnyx]]. Admiration, diplomatic support, and material participation are different forms of philhellenism and should not be conflated.
