# AI Oversight Stack
**Entity class:** Governance architecture
**Domain:** Artificial intelligence / monitoring / recursive systems
**Maturity:** Developed
## Definition
An AI oversight stack is a layered arrangement in which models, tools, human reviewers, monitors and institutions supervise increasingly capable AI systems.
## Mechanism and significance
Oversight becomes recursively fragile when one AI system evaluates another system whose reasoning humans can no longer inspect, requiring attention to independence, escalation and the point at which human judgment becomes ceremonial.

## Evidence boundary
AI-assisted monitoring can improve coverage; the regress problem arises when every layer depends on unverified judgment from the same class of system.

> “On the recursive self-improvement path, human beings will increasingly have to defer to models to explain how the models work and whether they are aligned, at a time when we fundamentally have not established that they are aligned.”

> “The proposed answer to AI systems escaping sandboxes is more AI systems monitoring them. The proposed answer to alignment is automated AI researchers solving alignment. This produces an endless ‘Who watches the watchmen?’ problem: AI watching the AI that is building AI, followed by AI watching the AI that watches the AI.”

> “Even if frontier laboratories adopted every proven control technique from nuclear power and aviation, we still would not know how to deeply align AI systems and ensure that they do what human beings would reasonably want when nobody is looking. The premise of recursive self-improvement is that human beings will not be looking.”
