# AI Stack **Entity class:** Layered technical and institutional architecture **Domain:** Artificial intelligence / infrastructure / political economy **Maturity:** Developed ## Definition The **AI stack** is the layered system through which physical resources become usable machine intelligence: energy and materials, semiconductor fabrication and memory, networking and compute, models, applications, organizational integration and human use. The term includes institutions and labor because hardware and software do not become social capability without operators, rules and adoption. ## Mechanism Every higher layer inherits the bottlenecks of the layers below it. A model frontier depends on energy, fabs, transformers, memory and networks; an application frontier depends on access to models; and national benefit depends on workers, businesses and citizens being able to use the applications.
