# API as Sovereign Border
**Domain:** Software architecture / Sovereignty
**Doc Type:** Developed Wiki Node
**Maturity:** Developing
**Collection:** [[collections/War With Empire|War With Empire]]
## Definition
An **API as sovereign border** is an interface through which a system decides which identities, requests, data, actions, and state changes may cross into an operational environment. The API becomes border-like when access through it determines practical participation and agency.
## Significance
The metaphor makes software integration constitutionally legible. Authentication, schemas, rate limits, permissions, audit, versioning, and revocation define who can enter and what they can do. A documented API can enable plural participation; an opaque or captive interface can turn interoperability into dependency.
