## Definition
**Affordance engineering is the deliberate shaping of an environment so that some actions become easy, visible or rewarded while others become difficult, unavailable or costly.** It governs through the structure of possible action rather than through an instruction for every act.
An affordance is relational: it is an opportunity for action available to a particular kind of actor in a particular environment. Engineering affordances means altering interfaces, permissions, routes, defaults, incentives, resource access or physical layout so local agents continue deciding while the surrounding architecture channels which decisions can succeed.
## Governance Mechanism
Affordance engineering scales because it does not require centralized micromanagement. A platform can shape conduct through interface defaults. A standards regime can shape products through admissibility requirements. A network operator can shape traffic through routing and access. A habitat administrator can shape inhabitants through resources, boundaries and permissions.
The mechanism can support safety, accessibility and coordination. It becomes constitutionally significant when the engineered environment is indispensable, the actor cannot inspect its constraints or meaningful alternatives disappear.
