# Agent Identity **Domain:** Artificial Intelligence / Identity and Authority **Doc Type:** Concept Node **Maturity:** Developed ## Definition **Agent identity** is the persistent, inspectable record that distinguishes one AI agent from another and binds its actions to a role, principal, runtime, memory domain, tool set, and scope of authority. Identity answers more than “which model produced this output?” The same model can operate many agents, and one agent can change models without losing its role. A useful identity layer records which agent acted, for whom, under which credentials and permissions, through which tools, against which version of state, and with what delegation chain. ## Identity Layers - **display identity:** name, avatar, role, and human-recognizable continuity; - **runtime identity:** the process, workspace, virtual machine, gateway, or account in which the agent operates; - **principal binding:** the person or institution whose authority the agent exercises; - **credential boundary:** the secrets, accounts, and services the agent may use without necessarily being able to reveal the credentials themselves; - **memory boundary:** which context belongs to this agent and which state may be shared; - **capability profile:** tools, skills, connectors, and environments available to the agent; - **audit identity:** durable attribution across actions, artifacts, approvals, and handoffs. Agent identity does not establish consciousness or personhood.
