# Alamo Quarry Market
## Definition
The **Alamo Quarry Market** is a lifestyle shopping center in the Lincoln Heights neighborhood of north central [[wiki/San Antonio, Texas|San Antonio, Texas]], near the cities of Alamo Heights and Terrell Hills, at 255 E. Basse Road between Basse Road and U.S. Highway 281. It occupies the site of a limestone quarry and Portland cement plant that the Alamo Cement Company operated from 1908 to 1986.
## History
Alamo Cement was chartered in 1880 to build the first Portland cement plant west of the Mississippi, at the site of today's Brackenridge Park; its cement went into buildings including the Texas State Capitol and Austin's Driskill Hotel. When that first site was exhausted, the company moved north to roughly 500 acres outside the city limits, where more than 90 workers' cottages formed a community known as "Cementville." A Swiss company bought Alamo Cement in 1979, the plant relocated in 1985, and the surrounding land was redeveloped into the residential, retail and golf-course district of Lincoln Heights.
Trammell Crow Central Texas worked with Alamo Cement to redevelop the plant site. Planning began in 1994 and construction on September 1, 1996, and the first shops opened in spring 1997. The design kept the industrial shell: three former plant buildings and five smokestacks remain as the center's landmarks. Today it covers about 580,000 square feet with more than 60 stores, restaurants and a cinema, and is owned by American Assets.
