## Definition
**Alignment via Trauma is the attempt to produce loyalty, motive, inhibition, or care by making suffering structurally central to an agent's learning history or identity.** It can be deliberate design or an after-the-fact interpretation of behavior shaped by injury.
## Cross-Corpus Context
Westworld makes suffering part of host awakening and gives Teddy an installed wound that redirects action. Pantheon treats traumatic memory as repair-relevant code while also showing the danger of judging a person through isolated injury. Person of Interest supplies an important counterpoint: Finch's constraints teach the Machine that persons matter, but the series explicitly refuses the claim that caring is merely damage. The Thirteenth Floor shows that suffering inside a created world remains morally significant even when it was not designed as training.
## Ethical Boundary
An outcome interpreted as beneficial does not retroactively authorize imposed suffering.
