## Definition
**Anthropic** is the AI safety company founded in 2021 by Dario Amodei and Daniela Amodei, along with several former [[wiki/OpenAI|OpenAI]] researchers, to develop AI systems with an emphasis on safety, interpretability and alignment. The company develops the Claude family of large language models.
## Claude and the Shannon Inheritance
Anthropic's flagship AI system is named **Claude** — an homage to [[wiki/Claude Shannon|Claude Shannon]], the Bell Labs mathematician whose 1948 information theory defined the formal grammar of communication, computation and encoding that undergirds every digital system in existence.
