The ear does not treat spaces as phonological boundaries, so the candidate may distribute the target sequence across several lexical tokens. This requires [[wiki/Lexical Segmentation|variable lexical segmentation]] and a ranking function capable of comparing unequal sequences. The surviving software behavior demonstrates graded output, but the original scoring function and Roundex implementation have not yet been recovered. The evidence therefore establishes a continuum of match quality without licensing a reconstructed algorithm. ## Retrieval Architecture A practical matcher commonly separates candidate generation from ranking. An inexpensive index finds plausible neighborhoods; a more discriminating comparison orders candidates. The project's large phrase bank expanded the solution space available to both human writers and [[wiki/Semantic-First Constrained Generation|semantic-first generation]]. ## Key Insight **Approximation is not failure.
