# Audience-of-One Attack **Domain:** Targeted influence / Harassment **Doc Type:** Developed Mechanism Node **Maturity:** Developed **Collection:** Gamification Collection ## Definition An **audience-of-one attack** is a targeted operation in which a message, staged event, false context, or sequence of signals is designed to be interpreted primarily—or only—by one person. Other observers may see the surface material without possessing the cues, history, timing, or access needed to recognize its address. ## Significance This is the limiting case of addressability. A public-looking signal can be privately meaningful when personalization, location, relationship knowledge, algorithmic delivery, or prior conditioning makes one node the effective audience. That structure can support intimidation, manipulation, elicitation, fraud, or psychological harassment while preserving deniability before bystanders. The concept is also easy to over-apply. Coincidence, recommendation systems, shared cultural references, hypervigilance, and ordinary interpersonal conflict can produce a felt sense of singular address. Assessment should preserve artifacts, timestamps, delivery paths, access control, corroboration, repeatable discriminators, and alternative explanations. The claim concerns an address architecture, not a diagnosis of motive. ## Sources - danah boyd, [Social Network Sites as Networked Publics](https://www.danah.org/papers/2010/SNSasNetworkedPublics.pdf) - Miranda Fricker, [*Epistemic Injustice*](https://academic.oup.com/book/32817) ## Routes Among Us and the Playable Society · Attack by Cutout · Epistemic Injury · Highly Targeted Individuals
