## Definition
The **Bay checkerspot butterfly** (_Euphydryas editha bayensis_) is a threatened subspecies native to the San Francisco Bay region and strongly associated with serpentine grassland plant communities.
## Evolutionary Nexus
Paul Ehrlich and colleagues studied checkerspot populations at Stanford's Jasper Ridge for decades. The work helped make the butterfly a model for population fluctuation, local extinction and conservation. The Jasper Ridge population disappeared by the late 1990s, showing that intensive knowledge does not guarantee persistence.
