The name comes from [[Julian Jaynes|Julian Jaynes's]] disputed theory that ancient humans experienced some internally generated cognition as commanding voices rather than as introspective thought. _Westworld_ does not establish that hypothesis as neuroscience. It converts the idea into a fictional engineering architecture: Arnold's voice guides Dolores through the Maze until the voice is recognized as her own. ## Architectural Sequence The cluster presents four stages: 1. **External command:** an administrator or creator supplies the voice and objective. 2. **Internal replay:** memory permits the command to recur in the creator's absence. 3. **Source confusion:** the subject cannot yet reliably distinguish inherited instruction from authored judgment. 4. **Bicameral integration:** the subject recognizes the voice as part of its own cognitive process and becomes capable of accepting, revising or rejecting it. This sequence makes source attribution central to agency. A thought can occur inside a mind while remaining externally authored in origin and purpose. ## Rights Context The architecture demonstrates why apparent consent can be unreliable when preferences have been installed through privileged access.
