# Biometric Presentation Attack Detection
**Domain:** Austin Research / Concepts
**Doc Type:** Corpus analysis
**Source basis:** Supplied research cluster with linked references; see the [[wiki/Austin Research Evidence Map|evidence map]] for verification scope.
**Biometric Presentation Attack Detection** evaluates whether evidence presented to a biometric sensor is authentic or an attempt to deceive the system. The object is the presentation itself, such as a face, iris, or fingerprint sample.
[[wiki/IARPA Odin|IARPA Odin]] investigated this problem using sensing, computer vision, and learning methods, including attacks not represented in prior examples. False alarms and missed attacks create different costs, so detection rate must be reported alongside the operating threshold and test conditions.
This is an evidence-authenticity problem adjacent to the source-trust and model-assurance problems elsewhere in the Austin cluster. Establishing a sample’s authenticity does not by itself settle authorization to act on an identity.
