## Definition
**R. Buckminster Fuller (1895–1983)** was an American designer, inventor, systems thinker and self-described comprehensive anticipatory design scientist. He developed geodesic structures, the Dymaxion map, World Game, synergetics and the “Spaceship Earth” framework.
## Systems Contribution
Fuller began from wholes. He treated shelter, energy, transport, information and planetary resources as interdependent design problems. Ephemeralization named the tendency to accomplish more with less material and energy. Synergetics developed a geometry of relational systems. Design Science joined scientific principles to the deliberate construction of environments capable of supporting all humanity.
His geodesic United States Pavilion at Expo 67 and his influence on the Whole Earth Catalog place him directly in the world's-fair and ecological-technological lineage.
## Corpus Function
For Beyond the Sea, Fuller expands the mid-century interior to planetary scale. The room, vehicle and planet become nested provisions. Spaceship Earth is both an ethical claim of shared dependency and a control-room metaphor: Earth is a closed vehicle whose crew must learn to perceive and govern the whole system.
Fuller's Geoscope also anticipates planetary dashboards, simulation and world modeling. The corpus preserves both sides: synoptic tools can support shared stewardship, or become administrative control surfaces detached from democratic standing.
## Key Insight
**Fuller treated the planet as an engineered continuity problem whose solution had to increase agency while reducing material waste.**
