“**Butterflies and Plants: A Study in Coevolution**” is the 1964 paper by Paul R. Ehrlich and Peter H. Raven examining large-scale patterns in butterfly use of host plants and the reciprocal evolutionary effects of plant defenses and insect adaptation.
## Significance
The paper helped make reciprocal selective response central to explanations of biological diversity. It did not claim that every interacting pair evolves in lockstep; its larger contribution was to show that one lineage can become a changing selection environment for another.
