It is associated with broad roofs and eaves, terraces and sleeping porches, exposed structure and joinery, wood and masonry, carefully designed furnishings, and strong continuity between interior life and the garden or landscape. The term ranges from modest bungalows to the highly crafted “ultimate bungalows” of [[Greene and Greene]]. It should therefore not be reduced to a single luxury type. ## Pasadena as Laboratory [[Pasadena and Modern Architecture|Pasadena]] became a major center of the movement. Its climate made extended outdoor living practical; the Arroyo Seco supplied a powerful landscape setting; wealthy patrons supported intense craft; and a network of architects, artists and institutions allowed regional ideas to circulate nationally through publications and tourism. [[Gamble House]] is the most intact and publicly legible exemplar. Its structure, furniture, art glass, hardware, rugs, terraces and landscape form one coordinated environment. ## Relation to Modernism California Craftsman is not identical to [[Modern Movement|European architectural modernism]], but it helped clear away compartmentalized Victorian interiors and decorative incoherence. It also complicates the idea that technological modernity must look frictionless or immaterial.
