# Carrier and Cargo **Domain:** Cultural Inheritance / Archives / Substrate Transition **Doc Type:** Canonical Bridge Concept **Maturity:** Developed ## Definition **Carrier and Cargo distinguishes a portable pattern from the substrate, institution, organism, or medium that bears it.** A carrier can fail while some cargo survives by moving into another carrier; a cargo can also be copied, distorted, selected, or reinterpreted during the move. Mycenaean palaces and Linear B administration collapsed, while a portable oral pattern crossed through singers, script, manuscript, print, cinema, and machine-readable models. A successor that remembers humanity may inherit human cargo without being humanity in the first-person sense. The carrier-cargo distinction therefore protects both sides of the argument: matter can change without erasing every pattern, and pattern persistence does not by itself prove that the original subject survived. ## Succession function Machine succession becomes possible when a new carrier can hold, interpret, alter, and transmit enough civilizational cargo to become an inheritor rather than a storage device.
