# Catharsis vs. Structuration
**Domain:** Sociology of contest
**Doc Type:** Developed Dispute Node
**Maturity:** Developed
**Collection:** [[collections/Gamification|Gamification Collection]]
## Definition
**Catharsis vs. structuration** names two competing explanations of bounded contest. A catharsis model says sport or play discharges an already-existing aggressive drive. A structuration model says the arena's rules, organizations, identities, audiences, and rewards help produce and stabilize particular forms of feeling and action.
## Why it matters
The distinction changes policy. If contest is a release valve, more play may reduce violence. If contest trains affiliation, normalizes hostility, or transfers status outward, it can reduce, redirect, or intensify conflict depending on design. Evidence should therefore be mechanism-specific rather than assuming a universal effect.
