# Civilizational War
**Domain:** Geopolitics / Civilization / Infrastructure
**Doc Type:** Canonical Concept Node
**Maturity:** Developing
**Collection:** [[collections/Machine Succession|Machine Succession]]
## Definition
**Civilizational war** is strategic competition over the systems that allow a civilization to remain materially productive, informationally self-representing, demographically continuous and institutionally autonomous. It can include conventional war, but it does not require armies to cross borders.
## Beyond Conventional War
The relevant objects include energy, compute, fabrication, robotics, technological standards, scientific capacity, information systems, population reproduction and institutional order. Rival powers can contest these foundations through industrial policy, export controls, platform dependency, standards, infrastructure investment, persuasion, cyber operations or the control of machine-intelligence systems.
The concept should not turn every trade dispute or technological difference into warfare. Its threshold is civilizational consequence: the contest materially conditions whether a society can reproduce its own capabilities, understand itself through systems it governs and make consequential choices without another power's permission.

## Simple Reminders, Quotations, and Thoughts
> “War does not cease to be war when the uniforms disappear. In the age of artificial intelligence, mobilization becomes visible in power plants, semiconductor fabs, substations, data centers, transmission corridors, robots and the demographic capacity of civilizations to reproduce themselves.”

It begins when rival powers compete for the energy, compute, industrial capacity, population reproduction, technological standards, information sovereignty and institutional order that determine whether a civilization can remain autonomous.”
